Does this mean it will stay that way?

Does this mean by the time it is born it will be 9lb 14oz?

Don't forget that the scans are never absolutely accurate. There is some room for error there and it may not be quite that big.
As long as your baby is healthy and a good size, don't worry.
And remember that the difference in pain between small and large babies is apparently not that great!

owlmaster · 21/04/2011 21:00

More important than size is the baby's presentation - if the back of the head is the presenting part then the head circumference is effectively 10cm / 4" less than if the baby comes out as a brow presentation (forehead first).

cowboylover · 22/04/2011 01:18

My baby has consistently 97th or above and my MW said exactly the same as owlmaster that the presentation is the most important thing.

I will be very interested to hear what the actual birth weight is as from previous threads there was a huge difference in the estimate weight and the actual birth weight.

FanillaFudge · 22/04/2011 08:01

The measurement was the abdominal measurement, not the head, they said it's more accurate?

don't worry, plenty of women give birth to big babies just fine - my 10lb3oz girl was posterior all the way out just to add another problem, and she was born in 4 hours with no interventions.

I have been told the scan estimates can be up to a pound out either way, though mine was almost spot on at 36 weeks.

CrispyTheCrisp · 22/04/2011 08:08

Scans can be out up to 20% either way

CrispyTheCrisp · 22/04/2011 08:10

Mine was 1lb out at 35 weeks. Told 6.5lbs then and she was born at 36 weeks at 5.5lb

FanillaFudge · 22/04/2011 08:18

First baby was 7lb 10oz, second was a suprising 9lb 1oz so I am expecting it to be 9lb +

At each scan it has been at the higher end of the scale.

I don't know what's better, not knowing (like with DC2) or being prepared!

Usually the most accurate way of working out weight is by using BPD, Head circumference and abdominal circumference as well as femur length. They usually use at least two measurents though, so I'm suprised if they've just used AC. For example, my baby's AC is currently measuring way ahead of anything else, so if they worked out weight by that alone she'd seem huge! (although she's a little on the large side, not loads)

That said, DS2 was over the 100th centile at 10lb when born naturally at 38 weeks and his delivery was fine, no tears or stitches. I'd love another big baby, I've no doubt my body can deliver one and they're so gorgeous when they're all chubby!

FoxyRevenger · 22/04/2011 09:34

I was told I was having a big baby - 98th centile and induced at 38+6.

49 hours later...out came a 7lb 13 oz baby, squarely on the 50th centile.

Confused

But...my cousin's little boy was 10lb 11oz and she was absolutely fine, no epidural, no insane tearing.

cece · 22/04/2011 09:37

Lucky you to have a big baby. They are so gorgeous and lovely. Both of my big ones came out fine. One of them was over 11lbs and had only been predicted as 10lbs - but it was fine and the quickest labour of all of mine! LOL

Here

FanillaFudge · 22/04/2011 11:21

The HC is measuring normal... but like you say, it's not very accurate. The femur length is also at the top of the scale.

Thank you for the link cece.

My sister was told 10/11lb and her DD came at 39+6 weighing in at a whopping 6lb 12oz!!

The head is the biggest part at birth so it doesn't really matter what they weigh, it's still the head that's the hardest part and there's far less variation in that.

Good luck! [busmile]
