No.

Try eating more fruit, especially bananas.

muffins · 21/04/2011 10:12

Prune juice-nuff said Grin

p.s if it makes you feel better I wondered the same thing too!

prolificwillybreeder · 21/04/2011 10:18

Kiwis are apparently good too.

nunnie · 21/04/2011 10:23

Not that I have heard of.
I have found if I need a good clear out I just have to have fish and chips from the chippy, I have a pancreas issue that means fat just goes through me.

Other than that fruit juice and fruit work and isn't quite as drastic in my case.

charitygirl · 21/04/2011 10:26

How? How could it possibly?? mind boggles

The best cure for constipation are psyllium (sill-ee-um) husks which you can buy from your chemist, and mix with water to drink. Not lovely but totally natural and very effective.

muffins it does help! I didnt know if i was being stupid or not!

is prune juice nice? sounds minging boke

WoodysHat · 21/04/2011 10:34

prune juice is minging but it works. I made sure it was ice cold and would down a large glass of it in one so I couldn't really taste it (I found the taste to be incompatible with morning sickness lol).

You need to get on top of the constipation really as it will likely lead to piles if not and you will feel generally rubbish all the time. If the prune juice doesn't work then see your GP or midwife for something.

Butterbur · 21/04/2011 10:36

Prune juice is lovely - rich and fruity. If you like things like dried raisins, you will probably like it.

nunnie · 21/04/2011 10:36

I found the luxury that is piles in my last pregnancy and if you can avoid it then do. They aren't nice and I got severe ones and bled and on some occasions lots. This time I am determined to control my constipation.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 21/04/2011 10:40

Again, no. Fybogel is good stuff, too...

LoveACuppaTea · 21/04/2011 10:41

All Bran has been a saviour for me. I've found having it for breakfast every day makes a huge difference -- miss one day and it takes me days to get back on track.

I really missed my nice breakfasts at first, but actually now I prefer All Bran with a bit of fruit with it (grapes, peaches, that sort of thing) keeps me from feeling hungry for longer, helped settle the morning part of morning sickness, and is just all around worth the sacrifice. Has MUCH more bran than the 'bran flakes' style cereals which really have more sugar than fibre.

BikeRunSki · 21/04/2011 14:25

No, not at all, I have just been constipated for a month! Baby is still here.

Despite munching through all sorts of fruit, cereal, liquorice (as much as hyperemisis would allow) I had to resort to Senna and Lactulose on prescription in the end.

MummyAbroad · 21/04/2011 14:56

I had severe constipated and piles (thrombosed ones twice, lovely!) and DS came out a healthy 9 pounds. I also had an mmc at 14 weeks - no toilet problems whatsoever. So in my experienceis that constipation does not equal miscarriage.

piles/constipation tips:

use a footstool when you go to the loo, it raises your knees so you are in a more natural squatting position, you dont have to push so hard (never push!) and empties your bowels more fully.

eat lots of bananas, onions, garlic, dandelion leaves, leeks and artichokes- your intestinal flora feeds off these foods and flourishes. More intestinal flora means food is better broken down and poo is softer.

do eat lots of natural fibre like fruit and veg but NEVER eat processed fibre like Ryvita, All bran etc. This doesnt get broken down, swells your poo making them hard and large and can cause cuts and tears in your intestine and bowel (fissures) see. Processed fibre also strips away the intestinal flora, so you become dependant on eating more of it in order be able to go to the toilet.

aloe vera gel applied directly to your bum provides temporary cooling relief from piles - its not a cure but does ease pain. You can find it in the suntan section at the supermarket.

muffins · 21/04/2011 15:20

Well I wouldn't say prune juice is nice exactly! But it does work-when not pregnant it just gives me diarrhoea but when pregnant is one of the only things that makes me go.
I think its just the thought that all the straining can't be good for you isn't it, but at the end of the day I think it is just your botty that suffers (sorry-couldn't think of a better term for it!)
Am nearly 17 weeks now and things are improving slightly.
Mummyabroad seems to have some good advice above.......(muffins tries to think of a recipe for dinner involving banana, onions and garlic....!)

givemushypeasachance · 21/04/2011 15:24

I agree charitygirl - I saw this pop up in active conversations and just had to click to see what possible circumstances could lead someone to think that one could lead to the other!

It's a little like asking whether heartburn can make your nose bleed, or if a twisted ankle can lead to food poisoning...

MummyAbroad · 21/04/2011 18:13

muffins recipes [bugrin]

Folicacid · 21/04/2011 20:48

I've been very badly constipated and I got lactulose from the pharmacist. it work. Also tons of fruit really works.

4pudding · 21/04/2011 23:46

No, but can cause piles which can be excruciatingly painful (speaking from experience). Get some Lactulose from your GP, it's safe in pregnancy and 'bulks' your stools so that they are easy to pass.
