Am 38+3.

Had to go hospital yesterday to have scan to check position of baby (he is head down- yey!)

they checked my wee and it had:

1+ protien
trace blood
leucs 3+

Had a hellish night - just could not relax and this morning my back is killing me, not like normal pregnancy back ache, its all round the sides of the bottom of my ribs, feel a bit achey in the lower bump but mostly its my back. Have the runs a bit too Blush

Is this to do with the wee sample yesterday? does it sound like a wee infection and are the wee results above consiistant with these things?

Hi Totoros

The 3+ leucocytes show you probably have a urine infection. The back pain shows it may have moved to the kidneys. You should go straight to the hospital urgently this morning and ask for antibiotics! If it has spread to the kidneys you will need the antibiotics in a drip and may need to stay overnight. Don't let the midwives fob you off - you have to see a doctor!!

It's dangerous for the baby if you have a bad urine infection, so if you are 38+3 you should also ask about whether they want to bring your birth forward to protect the baby...

Good luck!

HauntedLittleLunatic · 21/04/2011 09:13

Wee results do suggest infection. Are they treating?

Physical description could be wee once tion but height of ribs is a little high.

TotorosOcarina · 21/04/2011 09:20

can't bring birth forwards am having a homebirth, so can't be induced!

will ring the midwives, i won't stay in overnight but will see if they can sort me out with some anti-biotics from GP.

thanks

Just spotted Haunted's post, which crossed with mine!

The kidneys are just inside the lower ribs at the back, so pain there is exactly right for a kidney infection. Some people also feel twinges of pain starting in their back and shooting down to under the bump at the front.

Even if you were given antibiotic tablets yesterday you need to go to the hospital urgently today as you need antibiotics in a drip if you have a kidney infection.

If you weren't given antibiotics yesterday, you should mention this to the doctor, as it may have been a mistake and they may need to have a word with the midwife who saw you.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 21/04/2011 09:29

I did think poss kidneys too tbh but didn't want to cause alarm straight away.

nunnie · 21/04/2011 09:30

It can take up to 10 days to culture a urine sample.
I would suggest ringing your midwife, they might be able to treat it sooner, they did with me, but when the results came back they had to do another course of antibiotics as the ones I was given it was resistent to.

I didn't know this, but due to having a few in my last pregnancy I have to have monthly lab checks as there is a link to pre term births. My DS was 4 weeks early.

Confused2011 · 21/04/2011 09:30

Hi Totoros, didn't see your latest post!
I can see having a home birth is important to you.
You still need to go to the hospital rather than the GP, as only the hospital can give you antibiotics in a drip.
Sorry to be so strict, but kidney infections are extremely serious and could be lethal for you and/or your child if not treated properly. I wish this was not the case. I don't mean to scare you, it's just absolutely vital that you get the right treatment urgently!
Confused xx

IngridBergman · 21/04/2011 09:33

what could happen if not treated, Confused?

VivaLeBeaver · 21/04/2011 09:42

It can cause a kidney infection if left untreated, can also cause labour to start. Not so much of a problem here, but if OP was 28 weeks, etc would be more of an issue. If mum becomes generally unwell, raised pulse, etc this can casue the baby's heartrate to become faster.

TotorosOcarina · 21/04/2011 09:48

hi again

called triage and they said to go to GP to get anti-biotics.

IngridBergman · 21/04/2011 09:52

Hopefully the GP will listen to you and refer you to the hospital if they think you need IV.

Confused2011 · 21/04/2011 10:00

Was that A&E triage or the antenatal clinic?

If you have a kidney infection you definitely need a drip, not tablets. If you spoke to a receptionist or midwife they might not realise this.

I agree with Ingrid that the quickest thing may be to go to the GP this morning and then they can fast track you to the hospital if they think you need antibiotics in a drip. Alternatively you could turn up at the antenatal clinic or A&E and insist on being seen by a doctor, but you might have to wait a while.

Ingrid, I don't want to scaremonger. As I mentioned above, kidney infections can be lethal for the mother and/or baby. Have a look at these links:

So sorry to be so strict! This is very serious and you can't let people fob you off!!

been to GP sending me to triage

Oh blimey - sorry to crash the thread but this is worrying me now. I am 39 +1 was at the midwife yesterday and my urine tested 3+ for blood on the dip stick. I also have other symptoms of a UTI and made a special trip to the midwife because of pains very low down in my bump and tender feeling across my pubic bone and wondered if it might be labour (its not). She asked me to drop off another sample to be sent away for proper testing this morning which I have done but I am not seeing her again until tuesday now.

Do I need to see the GP and get some antibiotics? Worried about waiting until Tuesday.

Confused2011 · 21/04/2011 19:27

Sorry Sloathy, only just saw your thread. Hope you managed to speak to someone today.

Most antenatal clinics have protocols for what to do if we turn up with particular symptoms and/or urine test results. Totoros was different as she developed back pain. This showed her urine infection had probably gone to her kidneys, which is much more serious than a normal urine infection.

If you're still concerned you can call your out of hours GP tonight and see if they'll give you antibiotics or else try to get in touch with your midwives either if they gave you an out of hours number or else via the labour ward at your hospital.
