Just had a growth scan (34 weeks) and I'm really upset/worried afterwards.
I was diagnosed with GD yesterday and had the scan today, so all very rushed, which hasn't helped.

Baby is measuring fairly big, but her abdomen is huge, measuring at 41 weeks + 3 days. It looked massive on the scan and they were obviously concerned.

I have been told that I won't be allowed to go past 38 weeks and have another scan in 2 weeks, but they mentioned something about a C section if her shoulders are too big.

They said I will find out more at the next scan, but I'm really worried and upset, as I don't quite understand how they will decide and what it means.
Will she be huge? What if they tell me at the next scan that I will be induced/csection the week after, that won't leave me much time to prepare.

Somebody reassure me?

Oh no that suonds horrible, I can't really give you any advice, but if you are confused you shuld phone your MW and get them to explain what's going on to you properly. I hope someone with some more knowlege comes along soon. ((hugs))

Prinpo · 20/04/2011 17:09

Oh, poor you. Sorry I can't offer anything in terms of advice or reassurance but I agree with Joannezipan that 'phoning your mw for a proper discussion about what all of this means is definitely a good idea.

Would it also be possible for you to start preparing now incase you are induced or have C-section at 38 weeks? It won't change the outcome but will at least help you to feel in control if that is what ends up happening.

I had ELCS with both of mine and will have one with DC3 in July. Happy to answer any questions should you feel the need.

Take care.

i had an elcs with dd1 for similar (if the chest cavity/ abdomen has the largest circ, then there is more risk with getting the head out and then the baby getting stuck - that's all). i think they call it macrosomia?

dd1 was fine.

they'll keep an eye on you and check measurements, make sure there's nothing else to worry about, and then offer elcs if they think it will be safer.

they scanned me every week, then every other day which was a real pita, but were keeping an eye on bp etc as well.

no need to fret x

Thanks for your replies.
I'm more anxious as well I think because I've just moved house and am now out of the catchment area for the Doctors Surgery I was with before, meaning this morning (before I even found out about scan) was my last appt with the midwife I have had right the way through, as they have asked me to register at a different surgery so I'll have a different midwife. It's always been difficult to get in touch with my previous midwife directly as the doctor's surgery & the midwife clinic are really unhelpful.

I think if they say 38 weeks, I can cope with that as I have half been expecting it, but any sooner and I'll really panic.

Doesn't help that I have exams etc finishing 2 days before I'll be 38 weeks gone. Argh!

Grin my dh was away with work and i was writing up a dissertation, too. Grin so i was driving myself to the hospital in a foreign country and negotiating impossible car parking... not sure that helped by bp at all!

it will be fine. dd1 came with me to my graduation at 6mo - i have cool pics of me in a gown with a fat, bald confused baby. v funny. at least the exams will be over - i was finishing mine whilst bfing Grin

DirtyBit · 20/04/2011 18:47

Ooh I feel like I have it easy now Grin just hoping I don't go into labour naturally 4 weeks early!

if you do, you do. pointless worrying about it (although you will, now Grin)

either way, you're definitely going to have a baby pretty soon, and they'll keep an eye on you x

good luck!

Just to reassure you that growth scans are not always accurate. I have type 1 diabetes and had numerous scans. At 36w I was told that DS would be at least 8lb. He was born at 38w by cs and weighted 7lb4.
Good luck, it will be fine. Smile

Ahh thanks :) I'm just worried now that she's going to have a proper buddha belly so none of the nappies we have will fit haha.

oh, i should also have said they told me dd1 would be 10lb 13oz from the scan. she was 8lb 6oz. the scans are notoriously unreliable. Grin speaking earlier from a management of body shape pov...

Hollie85 · 21/04/2011 21:25

I've also been told i have gd from 28 weeks and have been monitoring my sugars...had scan at 34 weeks an although his tummy is showing as much larger than it should be his overall weight in the right growth stage....so far he is set to have a big belly and short legs so will look just like his mum and dad lol....a friend of mine who was diabetic was told he was going to be over 10lb and he was 9lb and both my friend and her hubby are big built so dont worry too much
