Gonna take DH to Harvester tomorrow for a birthday dinner. I love there salad bar, but have heard you need to be careful with salad bars etc.

I'm 10 weeks pregnant.

Sorry I know there's loads of threads on here about what you should/shouldn't eat!

Would the rest of you avoid the salad bar???

would never have occurred to me not to eat salad.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 18/04/2011 22:07

Why would you avoid the salad bar? Confused

I'm not a fan of harvester, but I can't see why you are worrying about the salad.

stottiecake · 18/04/2011 22:12

I think there is a risk of toxoplasmosis from salad that has not been thoroughly washed.

compo · 18/04/2011 22:14

Unless a cat has wee'd all over it I think it'll be fine

there's much nicer places to gk to for a birthday treat though!

MayDayChild · 18/04/2011 22:25

I ate lots of it when Pregnant. Yum
Esp pink sauce whatever it's called.

lolajane2009 · 18/04/2011 22:30

I had it two weeks ago and i am still fine.

Staceroo · 18/04/2011 22:31

thanks all, lol at Compo! Believe it or not Harvester is his favourite!

So salad is good as long as it's been washed properly!?

What about the potato salads and pasta etc... thinking if they've been left out for hours they might not be safe??

Though from the replies above, I think I'm perhaps being waaaaay OTT!

pinkytheshrinky · 18/04/2011 22:33

I would worry much more about going to Harvester full stop rather than the salad bar therein - birthday treat? really???

pinkytheshrinky · 18/04/2011 22:34

and yes you are being way ott!

nannyl · 19/04/2011 08:30

Im sure harvester have very strict controls, and wont be allowed to leave stuff out too long.

as well as pregnant people they need to consider the elderly / frail / young children and will have to comply with basic food hygiene.

so long as in the uk i wouldnt worry about it

nunnie · 19/04/2011 08:34

I think with the potato salad it depends how the mayonnaise was made. Apart from that I have been living off fruit and salad oh and ice pops, not related I know but still very nice.

Never been to a harvester, am I missing something good then?

nunnie · 19/04/2011 08:35

Oh is oh not other half, I haven't been eating him honest.

It's the raw egg thing, I forgot to say sorry.

slowangels1 · 19/04/2011 09:47

I was told I had to wash bagged salad before eating it - something to do I believe listeria potentially being there (same bacteria as to why you arn't suppose to have unpasteurised cheeses - apparenlty it's far more likely to be in bagged salad than cheese). I religiously washed my bagged salad throughout pregnancy but did wonder that if I went out and had a salad which originated from a bag there's sod all chance they would bothered to wash it first Hmm

nannyl · 19/04/2011 09:51

i cant imagine there is raw egg in the harvester salad bar!

boxoftricks · 19/04/2011 09:55

saladd and veg are sanitised in a cholrint tab solution first then rinsed
tis law

nunnie · 19/04/2011 09:55

In the mayonnaise I meant, not just sitting in the salad section!

nannyl · 19/04/2011 09:56

Im sure they wont be using raw egg in the mayo there either

BertieBasset · 19/04/2011 10:06

No it'll be fine - lots of health and safety regulations that need to be considered.

Don't worry about being a bit OTT. I became hysterical when I had a lick of Mr Whippy ice cream the other week, and this is baby number 2. We all do it Grin

nunnie · 19/04/2011 10:08

I don't know anything about harvester to be honest, but I know my local pub make their own mayonnaise with raw egg, but they tell you if you ask. If they use shop bought mayonnaise then more often than not it is made with powdered egg anyway.

nunnie · 19/04/2011 10:09

I did the same as Bertie but I didn't have a lick I had a whole my whippy in my last pregnancy and worried a little and that was my 2nd pregnancy. This time I am not quite as bad, but I do still check things.

KatieWatie · 19/04/2011 10:55

The Harvester salad bar is the best thing about Harvester - especially their red devil sauce Grin

I don't know how true it is but I'm told that in France they treat lettuce in pregnancy much like we treat soft cheese, raw eggs and pate here. Something to do with cat's wee. But they'll happily chow down on some mouldy Brie and a glass of red.... I think I prefer the French way!

cowboylover · 19/04/2011 11:54

I have been a few times when pregnant and asked about the Mayo and its helmans so fine to eat.

Hope your DH enjoys his birthday!

icravecheese · 19/04/2011 12:15

Don't avoid the salad bar - its the best bit about Harvester! All these ladies on here slating harvester too.... slightly rudey when thats where you're taking your DH!! Restuarants have to abide by stringent health and safety guidelines, so you should be fine.

I looked into mayonnaises during my first preg....if its from a jar then the whole thing will have been pasteurised to be able to survive for long periods on a shelf, in a jar. Therefore, totally safe to eat.
Fresh mayo, made with fresh eggs, (which is the one to be abit more careful with) will only last a few days in the fridge. I am almost 100% certain that the Harvester will buy in mayo in vast quantities from a cash and carry company - there is absolutely no way they'll be making they're own from scratch, so potato salads / coleslaw etc should be fine to eat.

The whole food rules thing can get so scary.... and just bear in mind that everyone on this forum works at differing levels of risk - what is acceptable to eat for one pregnant lady, might not be acceptable to someone else.... there are very contrasting personal views about what you should / shouldn't eat, i noticed a thread on here the other day about suggestions for a suitable dish in a fish restuarant, & the responses got VERY heated (and a little nasty too!) about what was acceptable!! Enjoy your pregnancy & don't worry if you eat something on the 'risky' list - like some other ladies have said on this thread, we all manage to eat something that we shouldnt have done during preg, its almost impossible not to, even if by total accident! Have a lovely meal out tonight x

BelieveInLife · 19/04/2011 13:44

Great post icravecheese - was just reading and thinking the same about the snidey remarks about Harvester.

nunnie · 19/04/2011 13:47

Well said icravecheese there is no need to be rude about someones choice on where they wish to eat.
Hope your DH has a lovely birthday.
