Firstly- the last week, I have been waking up 3-4 times an evening with excruciating cramps (more like spasms) in my calves. I am sure it looks completely ridiculous, as I hobble around the room at god knows what hour of the evening/morning attempting to be quiet so I don't wake DH who is sleeping soundly oblivious to the antics going on around him! My question is... does this sound like a pregnancy thing? I am quite clueless about it all, as this is my first. Not sure if I just need to add a little more salt to my diet or if it going to continue regardless because it is a 'symptom' of pregnancy.

Second question is completely unrelated. We are in the process of setting up the nursery and I was wondering if you think it is worthwhile buying a rocking chair? I love the idea of one in the nursery, but don't want to fork out money for it, if it is not practical and never gets used...

Cramps in the calves compeltely normal I'm afraid - just another one of the joys of pregnancy!

In terms of the rocking chair, I think that if you will be able to feed comfortably in it and there is space in the nursery, it is a great idea as it will give you another place to feed/comfort/'just be' with your baby. Only today my dh and I talked about getting a comfier chair for the nursery for me (our dd is three weeks old) and I have to admit, I would absolutely kill for it to be a rocking chair. Obviously there is no need for it, but if you want one, go for it as it will come in useful in my opinion!

We bought the ikea poang rocker doesn't cost the earth & is quite comfy. Not as comfy as a nursing chair but we couldn't justify the cost.

My MW recommended drinking a wee glass of tonic water in the evening to try to stave off leg cramps. My cramps were not bad enough for me to be too fussed by them though.

I get calf cramps occasionally and find the best thing to do is jump out of bed and stand on the offending leg, making sure that the heel is flat on the floor, this makes the pain stop after a few seconds (before I discovered this I would hop around for ages in agony!) This has definitely started more during pregnancy. Don't know of any preventative remedies though I'm afraid.

Rocking chair - I bought one on ebay for £10, lovely old fashioned one and can't wait for baby to get here so I can start using it properly. There are bargains out there, just have to be patient and keep scouring the charity shops/auction sites if you don't want to pay a bomb for one.

Good luck!
