I have PCOS and TTC for 18 months with DS, eventually conceived after 6 months fertility treatment. I was given progesterone supplements to help reduce the risk of miscarriage in the first 12 weeks but still had a very complicated and scary pregnancy, and DS was 9 weeks premature.

I've been sort of TTC naturally but assuming that nothing would happen but just got a BFP yesterday! Very happy and excited but also really scared, thinking that I can't maintain a normal pregnancy if I needed all the medication previously and things still went wrong.

I will go and see my GP tomorrow/Tuesday but have little faith that they will be able to advise me properly, most GPs I've seen have not even heard of the medication I was given to reduce miscarriage (e.g. progestrone pessaries). Are there any tests that I should be having to check that everything is OK and that my hormone levels are right? If the GP is useless what else can I do? Should I just chill out and hope that if I got pregnant naturally I can maintain the pregnancy naturally too? Anyone else had this happen?

Where did you receive treatment when pregnant with ds? Can you call them?

Congratulations.

Can't you just ask your GP to refer you straight to the consultant?

piprabbit · 17/04/2011 18:32

Oooh, and huge congratulations to you too Grin.

I was living in London when i had DS so am in different area now and don't know who consultant would be. Will ask GP to refer me but worried (a) he'll refuse or (b) it will take too long and I will have a miscarriage/something will go wrong before I'm seen! I actually have some progestrone pessaries left over from my last pregnancy and am wondering whether to start using them or not.

Take the pessaries to the GP, so he can see exactly what you were using.

Push for an early referral. Where I live the GP has no involvement in managing pregnancies at all, so would be handing you over to the MW or consultant anyway. It may be that the quickest way to start any treatment would be via the EPU, which your GP could write you a letter to attend the same day.

What is an EPU?

Early Pregnancy Unit - sometimes called the MAU (Maternity Assessment Unit).

I had pcos, my testosterone levels were really high for about 3 years no periods etc, then after having acupuncture and a couple of years of dianette my periods returned and i conceived dd naturally something i never expected to do anyway long story short 2nd baby i was pregnant within 2 weeks when i discussed this with dr he said pregnancy often straightens hormones out i have regular hormone levels since both children and my levels have always been normal ( now pregnant for the 3rd time). I fully expected to need IVF, we had been having unprotected sex for a long time before i became pregnant with dd.

The same thing happened with jools oliver i believe, one assisted pregnancy for pcos and the rest natural. I'm sure you'll be fine.
