I personally don't see the point in waiting for baby to arrive as it's a surprise whenever u find out but I seem to think it's harder to get sex confirmed these days in case they get it wrong as they don't want any liability.

Is this true or would it be local nhs Preference not to tell? I'll pay for a private scan if have to but just wondering what peoples experiences are.

Don't fancy a 3d scan really just want to know if i need to buy blue or pink or green or yellow even

Thanks all

Depends where you live. Here you'd have to pay extra. Find out from your hospital what their policy is. You can find out on a private scan from 16 weeks - although obviously much harder then.

Here in Norfolk they let you know for free at the 20 week scan if you ask. I have a friend in Essex who was told that they will not tell you the sex as some religions may opt to abort the pregnancy if it is not a boy!! I had never heard of that before!

apparantly here in birmingham where i live they will tell you if they can see.

Depends on the PCT. Kingston will tell you if they can see it easily, but they won't spend lots of time looking for it as it's not medically necesarry.

In Somerset they tell you if you ask. The lady actually had a look for me at 16w as I had an emergency scan due to a bleed. Once she'd checked all was fine she looked down below but said to double check at 20w. They do make it clear that it's not 100%.

They can't always see though - I'm pg with twins and one let us see but the other didn't.

Just find out your local hospital's policy and go from there. Some places will do private gender scans for around £50.

We found out at the NHS scan but got a second private just to make sure! I'll tell you if they were right in a couple weeks ;-)

hi, they let me know for free, even for my first baby, in nhs hospital, i am now 26weeks and when i went for 20 weeks scan they just ask me if i am interested to know the sex, i said yes, and they told me, no problem with the hospital that i am with. i think just depend of which hospital you're with.

I have booked a scan with babybond in a months time - £79. Had my NT scan with them and it was a lovely experience despite the worry of the circumstance - my experience of the NHS 12 week scan was awful - rushed and impersonal.

It depends on the hospital and PCT policy.

Where we are, very few hospitals told until relatively recently. My hospital will now tell at the 20 week scan only if the mother wants to know. And they caveat their findings heavily in case they are wrong (were right with me though; I think a 2 year old could have interpreted DS's full frontal display accurately!).

Our hospital charges £50 for an additional 'social' scan at around 23 weeks for gender - won't tell you otherwise. We're in Shropshire, but it's surprised a lot of people in the wider area.

BillBrysonsRucksack · 18/04/2011 13:56

I'm in Worcestershire and they told us no problem at 20 weeks, and then confirmed it again when I had an additional growth scan at 30 weeks.

I think generally here they will tell you if you ask, but are keen to stress it isn't 100% (although with DS2 - due end of May - there is NO WAY he's a girl!) Grin

Our hospital don't tell you if you have your normal (12 and 20 week) scans, but if you are under consultant care, the consultant will tell you. I'm not sure if this is because consultants may have their own insurance?

We had a consultant appointment at 18 weeks where they couldn't tell us and then anopther at 24 weeks. We didn't want to wait that long so paid for a private scan with a clinic that some of the consultants work privately out of. It was expensive, but well worth the money. We got a DVD and some photos and the consultant was lovely and really took his time even though baby was being difficult!
