So... where do babies sleep?

Hi there!
Know this sounds like a completely daft question, but it's my first baby, and don't really know much about them!

Cot-wise, I think I'd like a bedside cot, to make it a bit easier for us in the nights. Are these suitable from birth? Or do they have to sleep in a moses basket for the first few weeks? (Told you I was clueless!)

Would probably have a moses basket for the daytime etc (house is a weird design, with lots of stairs).

Thinking about the Cosatto, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

A cot is fine from birth. Just use a sleeping bag instead of sheets and blankets to stop baby getting swamped. And use a Moses basket if you want to for downstairs, but I just used to snuggle my two up on the sofa (away from the edge of course) and they never came to any harm.

Hello!

My babies slept in the moses basket till about 3 months, or when they started trying to roll over. I kept the moses basket by the bed (for ease with night time feeds) and would take the moses down or get DP to take it down during the day. If I needed to go upstairs for any length of time during the day I would roll the blankets up to make a protective barrier on my bed and lay them there (well with the first, had to put baby number 2 in the cot to stop DD1 for cuddling her to death!)

We bought a cot bed (transforms from a cot to a junior bed by removing the sides, so lasts a long time) and my youngest is still using it as her bed. And once they began turning over they stopped sleeping in the moses basket and went into there.

I would reccomend a cot bed because regular cots dont last all that long if your baby grows quickly, and a cot bed can be used up to aged around 5 years old x

BTW cots are designed to be used from birth, same as moses baskets and cotbeds x

Yes, a bedside cot from birth is perfect. Best thing I bought:)

I have the Cosatto bedside cot - found it brilliant and used it from birth. You can push the cot mattress up against your mattress and then just pull the baby towards you for nightfeeds (you can lie them on a muslin or sheet) so you don't even have to sit up. DS did mostly sleep in our bed, but the cot meant he couldn't fall out and gave us some extra space. Plus, as it's a full size cot it just moved with him into his own room.

I did use a moses basket too for daytime naps in the living room for about the first 12 weeks.

IME usually on a warm adult chest Hmm and wake up the second that they are gently placed anywhere else Grin

With all the best will in the world (and planning) you may find your baby sleeps in a moses basket, he/she may not, or you may find a bedside cot is perfect. I am a first time mum and had very firm ideas about where my baby would sleep, and for how long. Well that went out the window once he arrived!

My DS (almost 9 weeks) hated the moses basket and I'm now having to get rid of it. He would shift about and kick the bottom of it in the middle of the night, it sounded like he was inside a cardboard box! So sometimes he sleeps in his bigger cot, sometimes he naps in the middle of our bed on top of the quilt (not with us in it) and he has been known to kip in the pram, on his changing mat, in his bouncy chair and right now he is sleeping on his playmat.

To be honest he sleeps mainly on the sofa (I have a massive sofa and put him well away from the edge), flat on his back. This is something I wouldn't have dreamt of doing before he was born, but once they come along you do what is right for you (and of course what is safe). As he is still a small baby he doesn't sleep for that long, so I am always nearby and never leave him completely unattended anyway. Once he starts sleeping through the night I will have to rethink things, as I won't be looking in on him as often and he will will get big enough to roll over etc.
