Does anyone know why I would not be able to be be with DS while he is anaethatised?

I am 32 weeks pregnant, DS is having a minor eye op on Tuesday and the nurse said that it would be better that DH accompanies DS when he is anaethatised (by gas), she mentioned it may be a risk to me? I should have asked at the time but I didn't as I had other questions to ask and forgot to go back to that one.

Any idea? I'm fine with DH going with him, just was curious more than anything!

Can't think of any reason as there shouldn't be x-rays around. Plenty of pregnant anaesthetists and theatre staff. Think I once read about some query about repeated exposure to some of the gases in first trimester but think even this is not now thought to be a problem.

I'll be interested to hear if there is a valid reason!

probably incase your DS panics and struggles your DH can hold him better.

When my DD2 had a gas induction whilst I held her, I got a few whiffs of the gas too by virtue of the fact that she was on my lap and I was holding the mask on her face, so underneath mine. It made me feel a bit spaced out! Not ideal if you're pregnant.

Also as they go under they get quite squirmy and you have to really hold on to them.

Was going to say exactly the same as Sidge.
Plus, you'll need to get out of the room quickly as they'll have to get the tube down him so maybe would be better for a quicker person to go with him.

Thanks people. She did say it would be at the discretion of the anaesthatist on the day.

Sad about ds panicking and struggling, my poor baby :(

Oh Kara Sad He will be fine. I felt awful when my ds had to go under. I was with him because he was really panicing.
They originally took him away and left me and dp sitting in the ward, but then I got a call to go down to calm him.
I had to bear hug him on my lap and the minute he went, they grabbed him off me and pretty much physically shoved me from the room Sad
He recovered quickly afterwards though.
It will be worth it.
My ds was 3yo and was having his tonsils(sp?) and adenoids removed.

DS is 3, is having a tear duct unblocked in his left eye, keeps gunging up and getting infected.
So glad DH is coming!

Good luck. he will be fine Smile

I've been with DD1 a few times when she went under, and pregnant with DD2 at the time. I think like others have said, it's the physical struggle that might be an issue, although I had 2 nurses helping me out with DD1 on my lap.

He'll be fine, remember it's much worse for the parents that what it is for them Wink

They're not truly panickingn or struggling, it's the gas effects Smile

Honestly, he'll be fine and won't remember a thing.

I was 8.5 months pregnant when my dd had an op and was gassed. No reason not to be with you dc, other than stress! It wasn't great for me because she wanted to sit on my knee and not my dhs and my bump got in the way! She's got another op next week and I am now 40+4. My dh is going to go with her and I am quite pleased to not have to go through it again!
