Didn't watch it on purpose. Having spent 3 years trying to get pregnant, it's beyond my comprehension that anyone would jeopardise the life inside them. I would have spent the entire programme shouting at the TV.

I saw it
could not beleive the attitutudes of some of them.... especially the smoker "My baby will be really healthy and have a really strong heart because i smoke, as its heart will have to work harder"
She geniuinely was proud of it and thought its a good thing!
HOW can people be SOOOOOOOO ignorant?

nannyl · 15/04/2011 12:49

can i re-phrase....
i dont mean attitudes of some of them, i mean attitudes of all the people they focused on

I actually ended up having a fair bit of respect for the lady who hadn't got over her divorce and the girl who needed to improve her diet. They actually seemed to get the message pretty quickly and make the effort to change. On the other hand, I wanted to throttle the daft little cow who exclaimed at the beginning "I like smoking so I'll do it!", had one little cry when the midwife showed the negative effects on her baby then couldn't be bothered to go through with making any changes. Especially when her little tot was sitting there saying "I can smoke when I'm grown up!" and her useless boyfriend was doing nothing to help. Urgh!

i liked the girl who went on a diet but wasnt too keen on the smoker. i quite like some of the documentaries on bbc3 though.

I thought that the woman who ran the bar was treated quite badly actually. Yes, she needed to be advised on drinking and smoking and stress, but I am sorry, the bit where the midwife was giving her a ticking off for not doing yoga was totally and utterly over the top. It is one thing to suggest that a pregnant woman might want to ease up and take care of herself. It is another to guilt trip a woman about having a career and a life. I also thought all of that "I am the advocate of the baby" stuff was nasty. She started with an attitude that babies need to be protected from their mother. And I am sorry, her job as a midwife is to care for mother and baby, not to be the baby's advocate.

Not sure if I liked it or not, found it slightly depressing.

Agree with RibenaBerry - I don't think it's actually proven that stress harms the baby.

I agree with RibenaBerry too. In fact my doctor swore to me stress wouldn't hurt babies when I was worried about miscarrying in the first trimester.

I thought the biggest arse on the programme was the smoker's boyfriend. She appeared to have some conscience and was attempting to cut down. He showed her absolutely no support. Regardless of how healthy both the children turn out to be, I pity them having a dad like that.
