sometimes they have a chemical put on them when they are packaged so it can be a good idea, i have some that have been washed and some that haven't its entirely up to you.

happytree · 13/04/2011 18:50

I did for DS (PFB) and ironed EVERYTHING!. don't think I will this time, mainly because I'll have a 20 mo to look after.

SomersetBelle · 13/04/2011 18:52

I did for my peace of mind (pfb and all that!)

But probably a good idea, as mojo says chemical finishers can be used in the manufacturing process, and you also don't know the state of the factory they were made in.

I wash my new clothes too - my mother thinks this is bizarre!

SavannahRose · 13/04/2011 18:56

uumm like the idea of seeing all the tiny clothes out but not so keen on the ironing part!!!!

Thanks ladies :)

Most people would wash (I gather). I never did. Can't see that it makes a difference.

MummyAbroad · 13/04/2011 20:25

I agree with the others you should wash the chemicals and factory smells off. Dont forget you have to buy special non bio soap too. Newborns have very sensitive skin, some more than others. Better to wash than deal with a nasty rash on the first day.

HOWEVER - if you have bought a lot of very small clothes, think twice! If baby turns out to be too big to wear them, you cant take them back if they have been washed. Tricky.

debka · 13/04/2011 20:40

I never did. AND I used normal washing liquid.

And IRONING baby clothes???!!!

PrincessScrumpy · 13/04/2011 21:10

I washed them all to take off the finish, but had to stop using Fairy non bio as I was allergic. Went back to trusty Persil but did try the non bio one. (once dd was being potty trained I went back to bio to get wee out but will go back to non bio once twins arrive as dd is fully toilet trained)

Definitely didn't iron!

Joannezipan · 13/04/2011 21:19

it makes them smell like my home, DC should get to know that smell. :)

Kerri1983 · 13/04/2011 21:23

I washed all of my new stuff when I had DC1, I ended up 12 days overdue and think I probably washed everything in the house to keep me occupied lol.

I have to confess that I didn't iron anything though!! :)

bonkers20 · 13/04/2011 21:29

I washed everything that I knew the baby would wear but left things I wasn't sure about in case I needed to change them, so the "newborn" items (in case I had a whopper....I didn't!).
It's lovely to see all the teeny tiny things on the washing line and to then pack them all away ready to wear. I didn't (and don't) iron baby stuff.
I always use non-bio.

Awwww, I'm getting all broody now.

Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 22:37

I'm 32 weeks and have just finished putting away the latest batch of baby washing, I have washed EVERYTHING, even the bedding, I noticed the persil (I think it's persil anyway) advert on here that keeps telling me "New Doesn't Always Mean Clean" too many times and it made me paranoid wondering how many people had put their grubby hands covered in germs all over my gorgeous little pink baby clothes.

In my defence this will be my PFB.

:)

firstsupermum · 13/04/2011 23:16

I am pregnant with my second baby, i wached all the clothes that ibought, i did the same with my first one, you notice sometimes when you go to the shops, you may find some clothes fall on the floor, and also the dust, i make sure to wash all the clothes even if they are new, and even for my2 years baby, but really i dont like ironing (sorry, very bad mum), i am not good with it, i dont iron, but i do wash them with a non-bio, now i just use non-bio for all the family since i had my first baby.
good luck.

Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 23:22

I only iron the bare minimum, much to my MILs horror who irons everything apart from towels and undies. I only ironed a few baby things because they really were too creased even for me to ignore! Out of mine and DPs clothes, I only iron t-shirts, shirts, my work trousers and my only maternity party dress.

NotShortImHotCrossBunSized · 13/04/2011 23:26

Great tip. Only take tags off the things you are going to need for first couple of days and wash those.

You can never tell how big baby is going to be and might end up with a load of BN clothes you will never use and can't exchange Grin

Not to mention the ten tones of clothes people will buy you as presents. There is no way your little one will wear everything before they grow out of it.

CherryPie3 · 14/04/2011 06:25

I only washed the few 'hand-me-downs' I had for all 3 of my children. In Asda/Tesco/Morrisons bio.... It was fine.

Knowing what I know now tho, with considerations such as factory conditions and their employees hygiene habits - I would probably wash everything. Twice. But still in own brand bio Grin. I like my family's clothes clean and non-bio does not offer that option!

:)

Lookandlearn · 14/04/2011 06:42

I have never washed new clothes for dc 1 and 2. We are 30 weeks with no 3 and everything (slight obsessional mission!) has been washed and ironed but it's all got loft smell on it. I am not too worried about other people's hands or factory stuff on clothes and if it's just persil saying new doesn't mean clean then I am a bit cynical! But it is lovely to have the stuff smelling nice. Don't think it's critical, but of course you can't take something back that you've washed!

oranges123 · 14/04/2011 07:15

I think it is worth it for peace of mind. I generally wash all DD's clothes in non-bio before she wears them. (She is 16 months). I was getting slacker on this recently and then a couple of times DD has come out in a rash round her neck when I haven't washed tops first so I have gone back to doing it again. I would certainly do it in the early days when you don't know how they might react. I am another one who doesn't iron baby stuff (or that much of my own stuff really).

Tangle · 14/04/2011 10:17

When fabric is still on the roll it is treated with various chemicals to try and prevent wrinkling, mildew and various other things. One of the chemicals commonly used is formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Then there's all the dirt and dust that can be picked up through the factory, warehouse, shop.

Personally, I wash everything before its worn. Ironing's a different questions (although I did iron everything for DD1 before she was born - even the socks. I think that was my version of nesting...)

BeakerTheMuppetMuppet · 14/04/2011 10:23

def wash new clothes before putting on

(still smarting from battle i had with Mothercare re; this, DD had to have steroid treatment for rash she developed after wearing BNunwashed vests)

ironing....pfft, life's too short Wink

MummyAbroad · 14/04/2011 14:18

If you are going to wash and have lost the option of taking clothes back, I'd say its a good idea to cut the instruction/size labels out too. They can be itchy and distrurb sleep - its worth trying everything to up your chances of more sleeping less crying Grin

midori1999 · 14/04/2011 15:59

I've never washed a single new baby thing, just as I don't wash any of my new clothes. I haven't had any problems because of it (an d this is DC6) so I'm not going to start now.

lljkk · 14/04/2011 16:13

If you're worried about formaldehyde then don't purchase mushrooms in paper bags, those are reeking with formaldehyde, too.

LilQueenie · 14/04/2011 16:47

I would. Personally I boughyt myself a few long sleeved tops to cover my growing bump form primark. I didnt wash them and had the most awful smell of mould around me. Turns out it was whatever they put on the clothing.

seeksnewnamewithgsoh · 14/04/2011 16:53

I did, apart from all the chemicals that go into the production process, you don't know what rats are running all over the factory they were made in.

Never iron anything though. And just used ordinary detergent. And they go in with our washing. [bad mother]
