Anterior plancenta - when did you start feeling kicks? Need reassurance!

I'm 22 +3 and only feel the very occasional flutter. - and even then I'm not 100% sure it's the baby! My 20 week scan showed that baby was developing well with no concerns but my placenta was at the front so is cushioning a lot of the movement. However, I'm already anxious as this is my first 4th pregnancy after 3 previous mcs (all before 12 weeks) so am feeling somewhat worried about lack of movement (even though I've already been told that this is normal with an anterior placenta!) So was just wondering when those of you have also had/have an AP started to feel movement?

It was quite a bit after 20 weeks that I felt proper kicks - and as it was DC2 I worried a lot as I'd felt DS1 very early on (i.e. about 14 weeks) and everyone kept telling me you felt no2 earlier!

lizandlulu · 11/04/2011 21:43

hiya, i have an anterior placent and am 24 weeks, i have only just in the last 2 weeks started feeling kicks. i have felt movement since 13 weeks, but very few and far between. the actual kicks are still not very often, but alot more noticable now.

so in the last 2 weeks it has become more and more firmer movements if you know what i mean.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 11/04/2011 21:50

I've got an anterior placenta, and only started feeling movements around 23 weeks, as opposed to around 17 weeks with a posterior one last time. It really does seem to make a difference.

Hope that's reassuring...

Thanks for replying Grubbalo and lizandlulu....hopefully in the next week or so I'll feel more definite movement

i had anterior placenta with ds2 and it was certainly well after 20 weeks that i felt anything at all (whereas it had been before 20 weeks with ds1)... i think it was somewhere around 24 weeks.

davidtennantsmistress · 11/04/2011 21:56

mine is currently at the front, I had a lot between 11-14 ish weeks then nothing, now I only get some in certain positions (ie legs tucked up), also a lot of the kicking is low down, in someways it feels like wind - it's a lot less than with DS, however I know bubs is fine, when he does kick now it is a lot stronger & dp has felt it as well.

(i'm 21 tomorrow.)

WoodysHat · 11/04/2011 22:04

I was 22 weeks before I felt much at all and I was going demented by that point as was still awaiting my 20 week scan and this was DC4. Had felt proper kicks at 13 weeks with my previous pregnancy so was extremely anxious even though I'd known I had an anterior placenta from my 12 week scan.

Luckily I started feeling movements and had my scan later the same week so relaxed a little.

lizandlulu · 12/04/2011 10:22

i bougth a doppler and that really helped reassure me cause i could hear the movements as well as the heartbeat. it was £25 off ebay

WiiUnfit · 12/04/2011 10:30

Hey, another with an anterior placenta here. I started feeling movements around 14-15 weeks iirc but no proper kicks / punches until about 23 weeks I think. When I had my 20 week scan it was amazing to see baby kicking away & I couldn't feel a thing! :)

spatchcock · 12/04/2011 11:16

I'm 28 weeks and hardly feel a thing! Sometimes almost a whole day goes by without feeling anything at all. Must be a lazy baby in there but midwife says it's fine.

argylesocks · 12/04/2011 13:15

Mine was about 24 weeks too till I could feel kicks and even then it was occasional. I could see it kicking at the scan too but couldn't feel a thing :)

I hired a Doppler so I could check the heartbeat whenever I wanted and that really helped.

WinterLover · 12/04/2011 13:45

im 21+4 and have an Anterior Placenta too. Really gutted not to be feeling anything tho :( heard the heartbeat again today so that cheered me up. I just would like some flutters or kicks :(

ShowOfHands · 12/04/2011 13:49

Depends on where the placenta is I think. Because anterior just means at the front but it could be high/low/to the left/to the right. With dd I could definitely feel her by 16/17 weeks but low down. As my uterus moved up, movement tailed off except for the odd squirm until around 25 weeks when she was able to move to the side and beat me up from inside.

It's utterly, utterly normal though to not feel much with an anterior placenta until the middle/end of the second trimester.

WinterLover · 23/04/2011 19:32

Guess what Ladies :) Finally at 23+1 i've not only felt kicks, I've seen the kicks and DP has felt them too Grin

I cant feel them in the middle of my bump its always top/bottom and the sides so im guessing placenta is smack bang in the middle.

How are you all doing?

WiiUnfit · 23/04/2011 21:22

Yay! Congratulations on your kicks Winter! Nothing more reassuring than a few good wallops, DP & I love watching my (30+5) bump "jump" :)

I think my placenta is on my right side about half way up the front of the bump IYSWIM, so I feel loads at the top, bottom, left side and very right side but not so much on the mid-right side which can be unnerving when baby is lay that way!

Valiant1 · 24/04/2011 13:20

Hi all just wondered if you could give me your oppinion please? I am 17+4 and am not feeling any movement, i went to see the consultant on thursday as i (did) have a high bmi and he couldn't find the heart beat took him a good 10 mins Sad So all we could find was a wooshing sound!! He eventually found it! was so relived he mentioned the placenta then went on to waffle about something else. When I went for my 12 week scan I asked the lady about the placenta as with my ds2 it was low lying and she wouldn't tell me said there was no point as it would move! so what do you think does it sound like an anteria placenta?

WiiUnfit · 24/04/2011 15:22

Valiant, even for a 3rd pregnancy (I'm assuming 3rd?), 17+4 may be a little early & your bmi might be adding to the not-feeling-movements IYSWIM.

Did your sonographer do a printout of your scan notes? It should say on there the position of your placenta. An anterior placenta would possibly delay you feeling movements though.

Hoping you get some good whacks soon! :)

Valiant1 · 24/04/2011 15:39

Its number 4 hun x me too hardly a bump and no movement Sad and my bmi gone from 37 to 34 in 10 weeks not great but been soooooo sill it unreal thanks for the reply am lookin at my notes now Smile like you say maybe just too early Smile

ThatScrotumCat · 24/04/2011 16:01

Absolutely nothing at all until 22 weeks ... both times.

Even then it was light flutters. Try not to worry.
