Okay. Just a question and Morning sickness/MC

I have morning sickness, well all day sickness really. I always find it reassuring that I am feeling sick as the way I see it is that if I am feeling sick everything must be alright. If the baby has died would you stop feeling sick?

Am I silly to see it as reassuring?

Oh dear. I should have re-read the title. It should say.... Just a question about morning sickness/MC

Although I've read on other forums that morning sickness can continue up to 2 wks after MC, I had a MMC last year and my nausea stopped at pretty much exactly the time the consultant reckoned the baby had died.

They say morning sickness is a sign of healthy pregnancy so it's reasonable to assume that that's what you have. Surely there are normally other symptons of MC, such as cramping, bleeding etc.

I'm now 15 wks and have had stronger symptoms than last year and was feeling much the same as you until after my 12 week scan when the consultant identified a strong heartbeat.

It's a tough time - feeling so passive, waiting. It's better to seek that reassurance and stay positive. Good luck!

I had very bad sickness due to a molar pregnancy, so not always a good sign.

nannyl · 10/04/2011 19:27

I was in hospital with HG about 10 weeks ago.

I wasnt scanned or anything, as all the midwifes were adamant that being sick was a very very good sign!!!!

What's HG?

I don't think it's the case but it is a common "worry" - I read somewhere that MS affects around 80% of pregnant women so there is 20% that are not affected......
although in my personal experience - with my first pregnancy I had no MS, no nausea and it ended in MMC at 7 weeks - I didn't actually have any symptoms (no cramps bleeding nothing) and was quite a shock to find out at the scan.

This time I have had nausea on and off sometimes lasting all day, lost my appetite completely for a while and had specific food aversions. At the 9wk scan everything was perfect and I have my 12wk tomorrow so hopefully the good news will be confirmed...I am feeling A LOT better though and haven't really had nausea for the past week so of course slightly worried but then again I was told that symptoms do tend to ease off at around 12-13 wks..

I guess there is no set rule really....

HG = Hyperemisis Gravardium (spelt something like that!!!)
Its Latin for 'extreme sickness in pregnancy', & thats exactly what it is..... AWFUL

supergreenuk · 10/04/2011 21:54

Beesok I have my scan Tuesday. Hope it's good news for you. I think I am just looking at the worst case. It happens doesn't it. Praying for news of a strong heart beat for us both.

Oh I thought you were saying HG was a bad thing but I think your saying it's good.

My nausea disappeared around the time my fetus died last year. I had a MMC so I didn't realise for another 4 weeks, but at the time I suddenly felt a lot better and was happy about it at the time. I was 8 weeks and had been feeling quite sick for a couple of weeks before that.

nannyl · 10/04/2011 22:59

No No NO No No!!!! Shock HG Is horrible... absolutely awful, you feel like you are dieing, and as are so SOOO sick for soo long often, ending up severly dehydrated so need to be admitted to hospital for IV fluids.
Its 100% awful, completley debilitating, and can last for months and months. Some poor people need to be tube fed as well, as despite all mediation etc etc vomit everything for months. HG = living hell for mummy.
You loose LOADS of weight, as you cant eat / drink without being sick. I lost a stone in 3 weeks, and many people get it a lot worse than me!

But it is a result of LOADS of hormone, which makes you so stupidly sick, so midwifes etc dont mind, and think of it as a good sign that baby is doing well. That its about the only good thing about it.

nannyl · 10/04/2011 23:04

I guess HG is good for baby, but only sort of, to a small extent....

without medical treatment, mummies kidneys can fail, and in the worst cases mummy and baby can die, which is clearly not good for mum or baby... dehydrate / starve to death through not being able to eat or drink anything at all.

But about 1% of pregnant people suffer with it, so most dont but a fair few do, you probably know someone who has had it, but with access to medical care HG mummies and babies are usually ok, and midwives etc dont seem to be concerned about it as such Smile

nannyl · 10/04/2011 23:05

Oh and good luck for your scan on Tuesday.

let us know how it goes, keeping my fingers crossed Smile

I've had a mc at 6 weeks and a mmc at 14 weeks (baby died at 13 weeks). With the mc my symptoms suddenly stopped, literally woke up one morning with none whatsoever. MW said it was normal for symptoms to come and go and they'd come back. They didn't and I started to bleed the next day, a scan a few days later showed almost everything was gone and a follow-up two weeks later showed it had completed itself. With my mmc there were no signs at all that anything was wrong, my symptoms carried on right up until I began the medical management (basically pills to make everything come away) and didn't fully go away until a couple of days after everything was gone.

Any mc is awful but usually there are some signs, the biggest one is generally bleeding, with mmc there are no signs but it is less common than full mc. I know it's awful but it really is a waiting game, I worry so much every pregnancy and every time I get told that it's entirely out of my hands.

I hope your scan goes well, try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy :)

Beesok · 11/04/2011 00:37

Supergreenuk thanks for the good wishes and def. keeping fingers crossed for you too!
I try to not let the worry and anxiety overwhelm me - I know it's easier said than done but at the end of the day MC happens and in the first 12 weeks there is really nothing much (aside from obvious rules like not smoking etc which most pregnant women follow anyway) you can do to influence it either way ...it's a little cruel waiting game :) but now I learned to not worry about something until I have to :)

supergreenuk · 12/04/2011 15:00

Everything was fine. I'm over the moon.
