I am 30 weeks pregnant, i've had constant saliva in my mouth since i was about 8 weeks pregnant, but in the past week i'v also got phlegm. I didn't stop having mornring sickness till around 23 weeks, and the phlegm is making me gag, and occasionally sick.
Has anyone else had this? Are there any cures? Its making me really fed up!!!

No magic cures spring to mind I'm afraid, maybe ask a pharmacist if there are any phlegm-busting meds you would be able to take during pregnancy.

Another thought, I guess you could eat some dry "scratchy" foods e.g. toast to try and clear your throat, sorry I can't be of more assistance!

I tried mint tea and extra strong mints, not for that but for the congestion I get with hay fever. They seemed to help clear out my system.

Try eating olives. The saltiness dries up your saliva. It works but its pretty temporary. I have eaten so many now I cant stand the sight of them Confused

Drink orange juice - breaks my phlegm up when necessary (TMI - sorry)

No cures, as I had it for a month. was ok for a week. This morning woken up with it again!! Sad
It takes me about 2 hours to get rid of it in the morning - urggghhh.
I know what you mean about making you gag though.

Try and avoid milk, ice cream anything too creamy as makes it worse as does anything too spicy. Not to be too grotty but keep spitting it up as often as you can (brushing teeth can help get more up) and steam can help a bit too so try after baths and showers. Hope it passes soon!

I think I have the worst of these problems in the world!!! I have a cronic nasal drip tha drips thick sticky mucus down the back of my throat constantly and if I don't spit it out, it makes me sick, it also contains too much progestrian (no idea how to spell that), It gets worse when I eat and I go through six rolls of toilet tissue a day! Then at nighttime I take a tea towel to bed with me as the amount of saliva my mouth is producing is crazy!! It was all the way through the day in early pregnancy but you have to almost train yourself to swallow it which slows down the production of it! My advise to you is drink plenty as the more dehydrated you get, the worse it gets, and if you eat little and often it soaks up the feeling of being sick all the time with the amount of saliva in your tummy! As for my drip, vie had strong steroid sprays, nasal saline solutions, netti pots and heaps more prescribed by doctors, reflexology, acupunture, hypnotherapy and nothing!!!! It's crap!! And the moment I give birth it stops! Salty things can actually make it worse as your mouth naturally produce saliva to compensate for it, billed sweets are nice to take away the flavour of it, I suck murry mints accassionally through the day. But I find when I get slightly hungry it goes mad so keep yourself topped up! Dried fruit is good and the only thing that makes it stop for me is a cup of coffee, which I have one every couple of days as there not very good for you, and it makes it stop for about an hour which it does say stay away from caffeine as it can make it worse! Trial and error honey, everyone's different, but do try to swallow a little bit as you'll find it may start to slow down, it is hormone related so nothing touches it I'm afraid! Good luck x x

I had constant catarrh from 12 to 24 weeks - made me sicker than morning sickness ever did. I found some 'cough' sweets were good at cutting through it, particularly "Jakeman's" soothing menthol ones.

No cure, I think, to do with hormones I was told. Bless you, it's vile.

monkeybubbles · 15/04/2011 09:49

it's nice to know that this is a common problem as i have it as well. i wish that there was something that could be done though! it's so frustrating every morning and every night to be gagging on phlegm :(

gillykins2011 · 15/04/2011 10:14

oh thanks so much for posting this - I have had a hacking cough from 16 weeks and am now 31 weeks which I am sure is caused by excess mucas. I have now had sinusitus twice and have had two upper respiratory tract infections - all of which I am convinced are caused by infected mucas!! It makes me sick most mornings and evening and even worse I also leak wee at the same time - deep joy!

I have now been given antibiotics and they do seem to be working but before that was relying on small chubba lollies which seemed to help as well as transferring onto soya milk/yoghurt as cows milk is mucas forming. Also, apparently don;t drink any caffeine drinks as they dehydrate you and I have been using a humidifier every night which my husband is convinced is a waste of time but desperate lady, desperate measures..... The other thing I got told is to hold onto my bump and try and do 'deep coughing' to clear as much mucas as you can every morning. Its gross tho... leaking bodily fluids are not exactly a nice thing to talk about are they!

Thanks for this thread. Have had the same for over a week now. It was bad this morning woke me up at 3am, with it running down the back of my throat. Was taking a nasal spray at night, prescribe by GP, to try and help prevent it but sadly this morning didn't work. I only got that after waking up in a panic as I couldn't breath, through my nose. Which wasn't good for me or Bean. I had no idea I've cream made it worse had two lots yesterday 🤣

Flamingosnbears · 15/05/2019 08:55

Oh yes I've had this you need to drink lots of water keep hydrated get some menthol rub for your chest

youngfreeandnotsingle · 15/05/2019 14:18

So glad I've seen this thread! I'm 11 weeks and already had this for the past month or so in the back of my throat, it sometimes makes me gip!

Hi! 😃 So I normally don't get involved with threads and blogs.. but THIS is something I am truly struggling with right now 😂

(Goes to Google- types in phlegm during pregnancy* Mumsnet thread 1st query 😅)

This is baby #3 for me. I always had that nasty saliva issue.. 🤮 I walk around with a spittoon like I'm in an old western. 🤠

But honey.. this phlegm is new to me! 🤔 As one of the other bloggers wrote- gagging at night is awful..

I know my husband will soon leave the bedroom if this baby doesn't arrive soon! haha! 😂

It is nearing Spring 🤷‍♀️ so I'm unsure if that has anything to do with it- although I've never had issues with sinuses or allergies in years past...

I'm in my early 30s (not a spring chicken), so I think this baby is mixing things up a bit for me because of my age.

With that being said, I'm having the worst time finding food that will stay put, and this heartburn, constant spitting is enough to make any mom tell the doctors to nip it, snip it, or burn these tubes off! 🙃

I am really grateful to be able to bring life on this Earth. I don't want the meh-hehs, pessimist or internet bullies to come for me on this thread, haha.. I'm just being light about the woes I incur every pregnancy. 🙂

And, unfortunately we have all girls. Yes, we're THAT family...on the hunt for baby boy! 👶 so it looks like I'll be dealing with all of this again sooner than later!

Hi @MistyD i am currently suffering from excessive phlegm currently 20weeks pregnant, it’s unbearable. I am constantly spitting up mucus! I don’t know where on earth it’s coming from. I’ve had it for weeks now. Did yours go? Any tips? You were the last to comment on this thread so hopefully you might still receive this! Thank you so much xx
