Some of you may know that I lost DTD1 to IUGR (stillbirth) in 2009. DTD2 was born at 32 weeks, and is now fine.

DC3 is due on their birthday. Because of what happened, I went in for a growth scan today (28 weeks). DC3 is on the 10th centile, so at risk of IUGR. I have another scan booked for 2 weeks time (on my 30th birthday) and now I'm terrified.

Please tell me it will al e OK. :( :( :(

28wks and 10th centile is great in the context of IUGR (if indeed there is IUGR)- did they give you an estimated weight? 28 wks is a key milestone for development, reaching this gestation and 1600g is the minimum drs would look for if they needed to deliver baby early - the possibility of a good outcome is considered realistic then and you are going to go way beyond this point by the sound of things. If there were other problem indicators such as low fluid or poor dopplers i am sure they would be getting you back in a week, not 2. So try not to panic.

If it is any comfort my DS1 was on 9th centile throughout pg, with short femurs - he was born on 9th centile (6lbs) and is now 5.5 and perfectly fine and average size. DS2 was not even on the charts from 20wks, was induced at 37wks, born 4lbs on 0.4th centile, he is still small at 15m but perfectly healthy and developmentally fine. of course I was worried sick throughout both pgs!

Hang on in there and try not to worry, especially until you get another scan in two weeks time, it is entirely possible that you just have a small (but perfect) baby. Smile

Let us know how you get on at the next scan.

quickchat · 05/04/2011 20:21

So sorry to hear about your first DD.

This time they are on to it though. They will moniter you very carefully and closley and be keeping their beedy eyes open for anything that points towards the possibility of problems. They may even make a fuss about things that are normal but if they are even slightly out of the 'normal' ranges they will be dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

This is not your first PG, it's not even your 2nd, this is your 3rd PG and a totally different experience. Don't link them as one IYSWIM.

I had a very touch and go PG with serious risks to me and my baby 1st time. I was lucky, he was born by CS at 36.6 weeks.
2nd time they had me monitered, scanned and worried about the slightest thing. It's hard but they need to do this.

Come back and let us know how you are.

Bunnyjo · 05/04/2011 21:08

So sorry to hear about your DTD1, I can imagine how distressing and worrying this must be for you. Sending you some very un-mumsnet like (((hugs))) and lots of hand holding. I had PIH and PE with DD - because of that my pregnancy was considered high risk for IUGR and was monitored throughout my pregnancy, from 22wks onwards.

I will keep my fingers crossed that everything goes really well.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 05/04/2011 22:52

1100g is the estimated weight.

I've had a busy evening and feeling quite a bit better now. I keep thinking that last time I didn't notice when things went wrong because there were two in there, so when one died I presumed it was her moving. This time I will know if there's a problem (wont I?)

You are right, they clearly aren't panicking, or they would see me sooner than next week.

Thank you all for your kind words. :)

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 06/04/2011 09:57

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 06/04/2011 09:57

Sorry, Does (missed off the first bit for some reason)

loueytb3 · 06/04/2011 10:36

loopy - I'm really sorry about DTD1 - must have been an awful experience and I'm sorry you are going through this stress again.

I also had IUGR with my twin pg which started between 26-30 weeks so I am being monitored again this pg. I went in for a hospital appt on Monday and measured 3 weeks too small. Sent off for a scan yesterday at 27+6 and the baby was measuring fine, on the 50th centile. The reason that I'm posting is because my weight estimate was also 1.1kg (+/- 25%) and I can't understand how we've got the same weight estimate but our LOs are on different scales (10% and 50%). They have plotted the size on a computer generated chart but I don't know how they calculate the weight? 1.1kg is nearly 2.5lbs which doesn't seem to be on the small side to me. DTS1 was in the end 1.66 kgs and DTS2 was 1.84 at 36 weeks.

Can you track back the growth to 20 weeks - has it dropped down the curve? If it was always a small baby and it is carrying on the same track then you don't need to worry. Its when the growth drops off that IUGR becomes a possiblity.

Bunnyjo · 06/04/2011 10:39

The customised growth charts are usually worked out on information obtained during your booking appointment such as height, weight, ethnicity, previous births (and at what gestation) etc.

1100g sounds a good weight. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 06/04/2011 11:10

Yes, well that's what I'm trying to figure out... on the non-cusomised charts, all looks withing the realms of normality, it is only on the customised chart that it shows at 10th centile (hence trying to figure out what they use for this chart).

Sorry, DD shouting "nana nana biscuit", got to go!

OP posts:
LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 06/04/2011 11:22

louey, I think they use weights of previous babies, as well as maternal factos, to predict the customised chart.

DTD1 was 1600g and DTD2 1900g at 32 weeks, so both bigger than yours, maybe that's why these new babies are different percentiles?

Confused

Oh, I don't understand!

OP posts:
loueytb3 · 06/04/2011 20:15

I don't understand either because I don't think they have done that with me. There hasn't been any mention of taking previous birth weights into account in my calculations. Hopefully they are worrying you unneccesarily. Are you or your DH very tall - that's the only thing that may make a difference? Hope you get some answers at your appointment on Monday.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 06/04/2011 20:24

Fairly, but not very tall. Him, not tall (but they don't take anything paternal into account).

I called the specialist midwife earlier, but she couldn't shed any light either.

OP posts:
LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 07/04/2011 15:33

I just phoned the hospital to find out when the appointment is and got "Oh, it's a good job you called, they had forgotten to pass on the note requesting an appointment". So, it's bad enough to panic me, but not enough to be worth doing the paperwork properly! Hmmph.

Hi LoopyLoops, sorry to hear of your loss of DTD1.

Just wanted to say I understand what you're going through. I am also 28 weeks & baby's growth has slowed down, going for another growth scan on the 20th. :( Estimated fetal weight is 1020g & they're going to try to get me to 34 weeks.

Thinking of you.x

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 07/04/2011 16:26

Thanks Wii, thinking of you too. I'm going to post in chat to ask for people's experiences. I want to prepare myself with what might happen in terms of care plan. So, they hope to get you to 34 weeks? That's still quite a way off, and 34 weeks is a really good prognosis in terms of prematurity. DD was 32 weeks, and was only in hospital for 3 weeks.

Did they give you any more info at all?
