Hi, been going to a local Zumba class since January and now found out I'm pregnant. Has anyone done Zumba whilst pregnant or should it be avoided?

Any opinions ?

Thanks

I'd check with your GP but i would probably say it may be a bit vigorous. Not sure though. Maybe google it? :)

However if your anything like i was in the first trimester u'll be too tired to consider it! good luck! :)

I do a boxing and have done for a few years, there was a few bits I coupldn't do in the warm up and the cardiovascular workout, and I do pad work adn glove work no contact. For abour 6 weeks I was too tired to do any of it, but I returned to it once back to vaguely human and it was great. Am 15 weeks pregnant again and will be going back on Friday but have to change my routine again slightly because haven't been for a while and I am only 26 post EMCS :$

I did ask before continuing and was told all would be fine if I listened to my body and didn't overdo it.

I did zumba for the first few weeks, no worries. After that however, any thought of exercise/ being away from a bucket put paid to my classes. I would have liked to have gone back when I felt better in 2nd trimester but by that time was the size of a walrus and beginning to get pelvic plain and now in third trimester I would just laugh at the prospect of shaking my bump!

I dont see a problem with it at all...whilst you feel like it.....

adamschic · 04/04/2011 13:17

I do a form of Zumba and the organisers have said that they cannot accept pregnant women into the classes.

MadreInglese · 04/04/2011 13:22

I think the general rule is that it's not advisable to take up a new form of exercise during pregnancy, but anything your body is already used to is fine, and just drink plenty and listen to your body and don't over exert yourself

Very Envy as hyperemesis has kept me from my classes that I love!

Don't know much about Zumba but I am a bit of a gym bunny and 8 weeks pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant, I spoke to the Dr and one of the gym instructors at the gym I go to. The advice is to not start anything new and not to push yourself but I can still run, cycle, swim, do weights etc. etc.

Regarding classes, the instructor should be able to advise you on what you can and can't do and what alternatives you can do. However, it may involve you having to do something different to the rest of the class which is difficult if you don't want to tell everyone you are pregnant. I haven't told my close friends yet so I am not ready for telling people in my gym classes yet so I haven't done any classes since I found out!

Good luck!

hiya. I've been a fitness instructor/studio instuctor for 7 years and now do exercise for more 'high risk' clientell. The general rule is if you've allready done a particular exercise and you find out your pregnant your ok to carry on doing it. (It's more og a concern when you get a lady who's never exercised in her life, finds out shes pregnant and wants to be more healthy (which is great) and joins the gym!) Obviously be sensible if you start getting reacurring high BP then weights/body pump kind of stuff would be a no no. But with Zumba you'll be fine. Any half decent studio instructor will be able to adapt a class to suit all abilities so you always have the oportunity to work at your own level. I used to teach spinning and i had a woman attending my class pretty much till the day she dropped!

FleeBee · 04/04/2011 15:54

Thanks for all the advice. Will speak to the instructor tonight and will see how I feel during the class.

Don't feel sick at the moment but was v. sick with my other pregnancies so I'll see how I get on as the weeks progress.

Thanks again

if you don't want to announce the pregnancy yet and mention it to the instructor they should be discreet and can always pretend you're doing slightly different moves due to recent injury or surgery or something like that

Hi Fleebee,

I started doing Zumba about 6 weeks before I found out I was pregnant. When I found out I was already 5 weeks gone and informed the instructor, she basically told me the same thing as Melliebobs' post, along with no over stretching or jumping up and down.

I took it easy and did as much as my body was comfortable with, but when I reached 26 weeks, I just found it a bit too tiring so decided to start swimming. I find this really good as the water helps with my growing bump and weight, lol xx

Hi there!

Before pregnancy I was doing Zumba and Spinning classes pretty much every day, but the first trimester in pregnancy pretty much had me so wiped out I could hardly lift a finger. When I finally hit second trimester, I was told by my GP it was best to avoid exercise that gets your heart rate above 150/160 BPM as this could mean overheating, which could be harmful for the baby. I don't know if this is true, but in any case I didn't go back to my classes, because I have a heart rate monitor and was used to hitting 170/180 in every Zumba-and Spin-class...

I miss it like crazy though :(!! Can't wait to get back to it hopefully in a few months time (I'm 34 weeks now). Throughout my pregnancy I've been doing pregnancy Pilates, which helps with my SPD, but as I said, I really miss a good cardio workout.. Personally I would probably not go at all if you're used to giving it your all, because you'd just feel frustrated when you have to take it easy. But if you go, I would take a heart rate monitor, because that would help you figure out when to slow down a bit..

Hiya
I know this thread is a few weeks old but thought you may be interested to know that one of my zumba teachers taught throughout her pregnancy until 3 days before the birth at 40 weeks.
As previous posters have suggested, just listen to your body - enjoy the workout for as long as you can!!!!
