Period type pains - 32 weeks

I'm 32 weeks today (DS2) and have been getting period type pains over the weekend. I'm pretty sure they're not Braxton Hicks as it doesn't come and go like a contraction, but just seems to be a dull ache that lasts for a few hours.

They woke me up in the night and now I've got a thumping headache to go with them!

The baby is still wriggling around like mad, so I'm not too worried, just wondered if anyone else has had this?

Yup, i'm 32 weeks too and have the exact same thing. It doesn't happen every day but two days ago it was so bad I couldn't sleep at all. I've had period cramps on and off the whole time, midwives say it's just 'stretching' and its normal but no one I've asked seems to have had the same thing. You should tell them just in case but for me they just said 'it's normal' but then again, they seem to be very dismissive of everything.

I had this at 32 weeks (two weeks ago) along with severe back pain and went to my local hospital as it was a Sunday. They monitored the baby's movements for a bit, did an internal to see whether my waters had broken (nice) and then when all seemed ok they let me go home. I did feel a bit silly going in but as soon as I told them my symptoms they put me straight in a bed and told me they would come and see me soon. So they took it seriously which was the main thing.

I would get checked out with your midwife if you can today just for peace of mind.

I've had period pain since 34 weeks. I think it's my body just warming up for the real thing.
I'm hoping that because my uteris has done so many warm ups, my labour will be slightly shorter than it could be. I'm an optimist haha.
I'm now 39+2 and my pains are becoming more regular but now I'm hoping to keep baby in for a few days as I've come down with a horrible cold.
I would let your midwives know at your next appointment but unless it gets really painful or you start bleeding then I wouldn't worry too much.

Dull aches and cramps are along the spectrum of normal.

But I'd get checked out anyway. You might even have something like a UTI, particularly if you've started feeling headachy or otherwise unwell.

i think you should telephone the labour ward and get their advice... they will know whether or not you should come in to be monitored.

Am 35 weeks today and I have these too, they are pretty normal i think.

I've too have experienced period-type pain for the past few weeks - I'm now 37+5 weeks. According to the obstetrician I saw for my hospital antenatal check last Friday, it's caused by pressure from the baby as the head engages. However, it's certainly worth giving your midwife a call to get her opinion.

Yeah same here although I'm only 30 weeks. Been getting sharp period pains late at night then in the morning that last a few hours as a dull ache. What is it? Should I be concerned?x

I had period pains for a day, which started off strong braxton hicks which turned into full on contractions every 2 minutes at 33 weeks. Called delivery suite, they told me to come in, monitored for 6 hours, then had paracetemol and all eased off. Phew. Definitely better to be safe though and get checked out...

BillBrysonsRucksack · 04/04/2011 15:06

Thanks ladies. It's actually all gone away now (typical!) but if I get them again tonight I'll definitely give maternity triage a call - as you say, it's better to be safe.

I've got the M/W on weds so I'll make sure I tell her too.

countscot what you said about the head engaging makes sense - I kind of felt a massive downward movement yesterday evening (enough to make me feel a bit sicky!) so that may very well be it.

Funnily enough, the above all happened to me the day the baby's head engaged. According to midwife is all fully engaged now and that day I definitely felt it! Maybe that's what caused all of our worrying discomforts...

TheVisitor · 04/04/2011 15:46

Get that headache checked out. x
