What to expect when you are expecting

NHS free book

Mumsnet

Ina May's guide to childbirth. Very good :)

lolajane2009 · 03/04/2011 21:10

nhs book

kaz cooke the rough guide to pregnancy and birth

whoamamma · 03/04/2011 21:11

Second the Rough Guide. Light-hearted but informative, and done week-by-week so you can see what's happening as the bump grows, and count down the weeks until B-Day!

lizandlulu · 03/04/2011 21:51

second the mumsnet book, although i have the one that first came out. i am not sure if they changed the book for the second edition, but its really good. full of tips and real helpful things.

lilly13 · 03/04/2011 22:25

the pregnancy bible by anne deans... i did not like ina may's guide -- a bunch of mumbo jumbo of a writing style... nhs guide is down to the point although not very thorough - depends on what you are after...

Ebale · 04/04/2011 12:12

anything by dr miriam stoppard...

LauraInGuildford · 04/04/2011 16:17

What to expect when you are expecting has been good so far for me but I am only 8 weeks or so along so got a while to go.

MrsBloomingTroll · 04/04/2011 17:40

The Bloke's Guide to Pregnancy is a good one to keep by the toilet, both for your OH and for dipping into yourself.

roo1983 · 04/04/2011 18:37

I second 'What to expect when you're expecting' it was my pregnancy bible.

recklesspixie · 04/04/2011 19:53

I LOVE The day-to-day pregnancy book by Dr Mggie Blott. Prefere it to What to expect when your expecting. A colour photo of the baby everyday of your pregnancy and loads of tips and advice.

dizzy77 · 04/04/2011 20:24

Second the Mumsnet bk: states the facts, then the opinions, lets you make up your mind. In fact bought the babies one and have started on that now.

Also bought DH "The Expectant Dad's survival guide". Usefully complementary and has encouraged him to clean up cat poo, buy car seat & decorate house. I also note there is a section on buying a gift eg diamonds for the new mum so I'm hoping this comes through...

Gifted an American edition of "What to expect" and whilst thorough, a bit over the top: "before going on holiday, check with the Center for Disease Control to see if the water is safe to swim in" etc. Still finding it a useful reference in the later months.

Hatespinkcantcook · 04/04/2011 20:26

The rough guide by kaz Cooke. Read it cover to cover when first pregnant!

clitorisorclitoraint · 04/04/2011 20:43

What to expect is good for telling it like it is.

Avoid celeb books as they are the stuff of cloud cuckoo land.

Not much about pregnancy you won't find out about on MN though!!

MrsMogwai · 04/04/2011 23:24

I love "The Food of Love" by Kate Evans. Great book for anyone considering breast feeding.

I have the What to Expect book as well, but found it a bit dry!

OompaLumpa · 05/04/2011 08:44

I agree re the what to expect book. Friends also recommended to me Baby Secrets by Jo Tantum for the first few months after birth. I like the style of writing, not patronising etc but it is based on giving your baby a routine so if you are not supportive of this method maybe try First time parenting by Lucy Atkins, i bought both to hedge my bets!

nancerama · 05/04/2011 08:48

Effective Birth Preparation by Maggie Howell is a great read in your third trimester. It takes away the fear around the birth process. I'm almost looking forward to labour now. I'll have to let you know in a few weeks if it actually works though!
