Strange feeling isn't it?

It'd be lovely to hear your experience/ tales of hiccupy unborn babies :)

I was worried initially as my baby didn't seem to hiccup but it's happening at least once a day now (35 weeks)!
It's all on one side and seems to be the only time my mum ever gets to feel baby moving!

I keep trying to help make baby stop by rubbing belly (pointless but I keep thinking the little thing might be uncomfortable) and wondering why on earth hiccups happen as there's no breathing going on!

glizzle · 31/03/2011 17:51

Hi they hiccup when they swallow a lot of amniotic fluid (so my bump often gets it them I eat something sweet) and my MW said it is a way they work their diaphragm so it is useful for development too. I love the feeling, which is good as currently they're a few times daily!

soppypreggyloon · 31/03/2011 17:52

I get them too. Ds was very hiccup-y before birth and someone told me that was a sign of colic to come. They were right.
Dc2 is almost as hiccup-y so I'm expecting more horrid colic!

thefurryone · 31/03/2011 17:53

Yes it is very weird felt them for the first time at about 23 weeks and my whole stomach moved (partly due to it still being pretty flabby at that stage Grin).

Didn't really feel them again until quite recently (now 36+6) but the baby had them at my last midwife appointment and they were picked up by the doppler when they were looking for the heartbeat so I got to hear them which was pretty cool!

phonix · 31/03/2011 19:36

Yes, lots of hiccups with Baby No1 (girl) during pregnancy, and she turned out to be the same outside too - no problems with colic though as suggested above.
Baby No2 (boy) almost no hiccups in the womb or outside of it.
Baby No3 (35 wks pg), hiccupping at least twice daily - another little girl, so no surprises there! Will be interesting to see if she carries on like this after birth too.

My ds hiccuped LOADS when I was pregnant...people could see my bump hiccuping from the other side of the room Grin
he continued to get hiccups quite a bit when he was born but never had any problems with colic....in fact he never really cried, making up for it now though at 3 and a 1/2!

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy x

suburbanslob · 31/03/2011 20:16

Yep - LOTS of hiccups! In fact although I knew it was quite normal for the bub to get the, he/she was getting them five times a day and so I rang the midwife! All fine though. To be honest I don't really like it when they baby gets hiccups as I worry that it's scared in there (silly I know).

suburbanslob · 31/03/2011 20:18

God - sorry for the awful grammar above. I blame baby brain...and not reading through posts before posting!

My 18 month old is hiccupping next to me at the moment. She has been getting them most days since she was a 7 month fetus. It usually happens when she laughs. It's sweet. Whenever she gets them it reminds me of giggling at my bump twitching.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile.

lovemybabyboy · 01/04/2011 22:15

I used to get that all the time when i was pregnant with ds, yes it is a very strange feeling! I remember not liking it! haha! Im just 10+2 weeks with DC2 so ill wait and see how this one turns out! Grin

Lynzilove · 01/04/2011 22:21

started feeling him hiccup last friday. its a bizarre feeling, he now ets them all the time - particuarly when i have full fat sprite! like hes thrashing about with each one - also noticed he uses my bladder as a launchpad for his hiccups as i always need a wee afterwards!

JimmyChoo17 · 01/04/2011 22:21

How do you tell that it's hiccups? Is there a distinct feeling to it?

Am 25 weeks and wondering what they are like? Bubsmust be breech as most of my movements are really low down

PrincessScrumpy · 01/04/2011 22:22

I had somebody go into me with a trolly when pg with dd1 - I was about 27 weeks. The shock of it meant I fainted (I tend to do this) so somebody called an ambulance. I needed anti-d injection and mw tried to monitor baby's heart beat. MW got really cross with me as she couldn't get a clear reading as dd had hiccups - not sure how I was supposed to stop dd but dh and I found it hilarious. We figured that the regularity of the hiccups meant dd was fine - ended up in hospital for 3 hours before they got the readings they wanted.

ShowOfHands · 01/04/2011 22:25

I loved it when dd had hiccups. She did it at least once a day from 35 weeks.

JimmyChoo, it feels like, er, the baby is hiccuping. Grin It's very distinctive, they rhythmically jump.

Perpetuallypregnant · 01/04/2011 22:29

I never felt this with my first 3 pregnancies, people would talk about it and I'd feel very left out!
But in my last and current pregnancies it's very distinctive and frequent. Dd3 had them all the time and I remember when she came out once she was lying on me and started hiccupping it felt almost identical only on the wrong side!

Very cute.

FirstVix · 02/04/2011 10:26

JimmyChoo I also wondered if I'd missed the signals early on but it really was obvious later as the baby got bigger - as ShowOfHands said - rhythmical, regular jumps.

Also, I carry low and felt all movements low before 30 odd weeks - right down to my hips! But midwife has assured me at last 2 appointments that baby is head down so either baby moved or I was feeling more there as skin is thinner or something?

Where your plaecenta is might affect where you feel moves too - if it's higher at the front then this might mask smaller movements when the baby's smaller and has more room!

BeeBopBunny · 02/04/2011 10:34

Oh this thread takes me back - my DD used to hiccup loads and loads in the womb - and she still does now (15mo)!

megansmummy1 · 02/04/2011 21:41

My DD did this several times a day and still gets them now every time she has a laughing fit - she is 3.5!

NorthernGobshite · 02/04/2011 22:01

My dd (now 6) hiccupped numerous times a day whilst in womb and still gets hiccups regularly!! It used to feel very odd, but kind of nice.

lou11376 · 04/04/2011 10:43

I'm 40+6 today and my bubs has been getting hiccups for ages. He had a massive hiccup session last night- I swear to God, if I wasn't so 'sturdy', he'd have hiccuped me straight off the sofa! I still love it though! Only time will tell if he is as bad on the outside...x

wobblyweeble82 · 04/04/2011 11:00

My DD is hiccuping away as I type! I'm 33 weeks and she's been hiccuping at least once a day for the past two months. Even DH can feel when she has them now :) I think she gets narked though as hlafway through, she has a right old wriggle and kick, little monkey. I will say though that last night, they were that low I though she was going to hiccup her way out... Not the nicest feeling I've ever had, won't lie ...

Bonkerz · 04/04/2011 11:03

yes, am currently 34+1 and baby boy hiccups every day, normally around 6pm ish BUT this morning it was 5am and lasted for 40 minutes! whole belly moves and i can feel head in pelvis and bum and legs in ribs....not the most comfortable experience but reassuring.
