Has anybody else had this problem with dating scans? I feel like I'm the only one :(

Here it goes...
My lmp was 30th Oct 2010,However i NEVER have the perfect 28 day cycle,None of this came to mind when i visited the doctor he said i would be 5 weeks pregnant on that day based on a 28 day cycle,As it came closer to my dating scan i was nervous...Dating scan put me at 11 weeks 4 days pregnant as I worked out the dates on due dates calculators on here it puts me at a due date of Aug 6th & the hospitals are putting me at Aug 5th...I know the date of conception so these days could not possibly be correct I'm sure that they are dating me 1 week ahead of what I actually am & baby wont come along until AUg 14th...I'm going to my doc tomorrow to discuss this and see what she says? Has anybody else had this problem with dating scans been 1 weeks ahead of what you actually are in pregnancy? Or is it all just in my mind..

My dd was estimated to be born 2 weeks before I thought my date was. She was induced 8 days after my date (after having a scan that said she would be 7 1/2 lbs) and she was eventually born 2 days later, so 2 weeks plus 10 days after the 'scan' EDD. She didn't looked cooked but was 9lbs5oz and very long, so now I think she must have been long from the beginning.... This was 14 years ago and I had assumed scanning techniques have improved by now....!

I have 3 different EDDs - 1 LMP and 2 from dating scans.

I know exactly when we conceived as DH works away so there was one possible weekend window of conception and fertilisation etc must have happened AFTER that.

OP, try not to get too hung up on "your" DD of 14th August.

You may be right, but even if you are it doesn't mean your baby would actually come on 14th August. It could be anything from 24th July to 31st August! Well within the range suggested by your EDD.

DS1 was born at 38 weeks (based on EDD) and DS2 at 40+2 weeks. So you can never tell.

DD is an IVF baby so we obviously knew exactly when the due date should have been. Because we had early scans at 6 and 8 weeks, I wasn't offered an NHS 12 week scan. I had a private one done at 11.5 weeks which dated her at about 13 weeks.

btw even the early scans showed growth a couple of days ahead - it seems some foetuses do just develop quicker than others in the early days. My due date was not changed.

MrsBloomingTroll · 31/03/2011 17:26

I've got a 10-day difference between my due date based on lmp and the due date based on the scan, which is a big difference! I also KNOW the conception date due to DH working away and other things that happened around that time, and the scan-based date is way too early.

The good thing about the uncertainty is that we can play it up with relatives/friends and hopefully won't be hassled quite so much at the due date. Because, as far as we're concerned, there isn't a single due date - it's a range of dates between which the baby might arrive. (This is DC2 so we are less anxious to know an exact date. DD1 arrived at 5 days overdue.)

The bad thing about it is that if the hospital decides I've gone too overdue and tries to force me to be induced, I'm going to really have to dig my heels in and argue my case about my dates.

My EDD based on my Lmp (14 Nov) was 21 Aug but when I went for scan they put it at 14 Aug, he was then actually born on his due date and weighed 9lb 3oz! I think babies must just grow at different rates and different sizes, still convinced my real due date was a week later but at that size glad he appeared when he did! God knows how big it will be when I have a second!

COCKadoodledooo · 31/03/2011 17:50

There's a calculator on Babymed that allows you to put in all sorts of things rather than LMP (or if you use that, you can change your cycle length - it doesn't assume the 'standard' 28) to give a more accurate date. It gave me a due date that matched my scan date, even though the mw had calculated it to be different (mine is not a 28 day cycle). There was less than a week in it though, so nothing needed to be changed - policy here is to go with scan date only if it's more than a week different to calculated date.

With this pg I've had two dates from two scans, one private and one nhs. They were 10 days apart! One of them has to be wrong!

BabydueAugust · 31/03/2011 18:09

I was thinking of going for a private scan...If its worth putting my mind at ease of course

Why go for a private scan? It might show nothing different.

Like a few people on here, this happened to me: DS's edd was changed by two weeks by the scan.

Then when he was delivered before their due date (at 39w by their dates) the ob. commented on how he didn't look right for dates. (He was fine but a very big baby even for the hospital dates.) The truth probably lay somewhere in the middle.

PepperPotts · 31/03/2011 18:19

My EDD with DD was moved by 19 days after my dating scan, from July 1st to July 20th.

I knew this couldn't be right as we had an 8 month old too and, well, it's not like there were tons of oppurtunities I could have concieved!! I explained this often and at my 20 week scan was measuring 10 days "over"

Anyhoo, she was born on June 26th, so officially at 36+4 but I KNOW I was about 39 weeks. She also only weighed 7oz less than our DS who was born at 41 weeks.

I'm 36 weeks with dc3 now and when I booked in with my midwife they were unsure if I could go on Midwifery Led Care because I have had a "premature baby". I explained the difference in dates to the MW and she said I should have asked the sonographer to re do the measurements. She said mums know best and her weight didn't appear to be that of a 36 week old baby, in comparison to my 41 weeker!

After all that, I suppose my point is, baby will come when baby comes and something written on a piece of paper won't alter that!

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 31/03/2011 19:58

BabydueAugust you may get a third date from a second scan. It won't change anything though...

MrsBloomingTroll · 31/03/2011 20:27

Just keep your diary free for August, which is what we're doing!

Your baby will be born when you and s/he are ready.

I know it's a PITA (I'm a real "planner" so it does my head in too), but IMHO this is one of those things in life where you just have to let go and let nature take its course.

A bit of reflexology, a hot curry, sex, pineapple, raspberry leaf tea and nipple-tweaking in the second week of August won't hurt though!
