Iron tablets v syrup. Any difference in absorption?

My iron levels were low, so I was prescribed tablets but after a couple of weeks, my levels had dropped further.

So, today, a lovely dr prescribed me a syrup. But, and this is the good bit, it actually contains less iron than the tablets. So, is he being a complete numpty (this is the surgery than finally got round to referring me to a consultant that I'll see at 38 weeks (should have been referred right at the start, apparently) and that failed to send of a urine sample with protein in it, so they have form at being shit), or does the body absorb it better in liquid form?

I'm going to phone them in the morning to clarify, but surely it makes no sense to prescribe a lower dosage than that which wasn't making a difference??

Any ideas?

Is it Spatone or Flurodax (sp?) I have been told that both of these are more readily absorbed by the body than tablets, even though they do have a lower iron content than tablets. I take spatone, which is basically mineral water with an incredibly high iron content, mixed with orange juice which aids absorption further.

It's also wise to drink tea or coffee (even decaff) when taking it as this can inhibit absorption further.

No, the midwife recommend Spatone, but the dr just gave me Ferrous Fumerate syrup. He didn't even bother reading my notes, even though I put them in front of his nose.

Can I ask to change my prescription?
