Have I Overdone the Exercise? Baby Stopped Moving - 18 Weeks

Hi all,

I'm getting very scared about the fact that my baby hasn't been moving around since Sunday evening. For a few weeks prior to that I've been able to feel the baby 'flipping' over when I am in bed and especially during the evenings. It's been getting increasingly strong as the weeks go by, and I've also felt a couple of what seemed to be 'kick' type feelings.

Now on Sunday I went for a long bike ride with some friends. I was very fit pre-pregnancy so this was definitely within my capability. A couple of times during the ride I got out of breath to the point where I thought "oops, must slow down here" after going up hill but the rest of the time I thought I was doing fine - I knew it was exercise, but it didn't feel like I was doing any harm, just normal stuff. I was chatting to friends all the time so not over-exerting myself.

What I'm worried about is that in bed on Sunday evening (some hours after I got back home from the ride) the baby had a moving around fest and was flipping like mad and this is when I felt the kick type feelings, but since then there has been nothing at all... I've just tried the drinking cold water and eating something sweet, and also rolling from side to side but still nothing...

What would you do? Should I call my midwife? My first priority is whether the baby is ok and I would really really like some reassurance. However I'm also scared / aware that this might be used as an opportunity to give me a good telling off about exercise at this level. The available advice is quite contradictory on this subject...

The paranoid part of me is concerned I have caused hypoxia and damaged the baby's developing brain. DH is away so I'm on my own worrying here!

Thanks for reading.

I would ring your mw and ask if they will check the baby for you? I'm 11 weeks with my first, so no expert, but it could just be where the baby is lying/where your placenta is at your gestation? I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, but for your peace of mind go and get checked out - you don't need to tell them it was a long ride?

go to you antenatal unit and ask them to run the doppler over your tummy. My mum died when I was 19w pg, and DS stopped moving for a couple of days, so I went in (without an appt) and explained to them how worried I was and why, and they saw me almost immediately just to check for a heartbeat.

Off to see midwife now... she said she would fit me in between appointments this mornign if I go to the surgery and wait.

Thanks for your replies - much appreciated.

Hope everything goes ok LearningFast.

So sorry to hear about your mum thumbwitch. I can't imagine how terrible that must've been for you. xx

good luck, sure all will be fine, fwiw, under 14 weeks I was having lots of kicks, but now not so much due to the placenta being on the front & bubs's position but hearing the heart will reassure you thou :)

Thanks everyone, all is well!

The midwife at my GP surgery was lovely - I'm so glad I went.

She fitted me in between appointments and I blurted out the whole story (I'm crap at telling half truths!) and she wasn't judgemental at all. She looked as relieved as I was when the babies heartbeat came through. I cried lots and she gave me a big hug - funny, as when I first met her I though she was a bit frosty so you never can tell.

There were lots of noises of the baby moving around too apparently - I couldn't tell which they were but the midwife said she could hear this so all is well, it's just situated high up in the fundus at the moment so I can't feel it (probably hiding in case I think about riding a bike again).

Think I'll take it a little easier from now on, just to be on the safe side. Maybe just go out with DH for short jaunts close to home. That was all a bit too scary...

my first pregnancy ended at 17 weeks and I kicked myself for ages thinking it was my fault for stuff like over exercising (I ran a half marathon at 14 weeks). Anyway, had it tested and the view was they were amazed the pregnancy had survived as far as it did as most of that type end a lot earlier. So I stop worrying now and accept that as long as I don't do anything really stupidly detrimental to the baby, it will all be ok. Played squash till 7 months with second pg etc. So please don't get too paranoid some things can just be outside our control

Learningfast - so pleased to hear that everything is ok. FWIW, it's very unlikely that over-exercising will cause you to lose the baby - but that doesn't mean you can carry on over-exerting yourself! Take it a bit more easy on yourself - your bod will thank you for it. As your ligaments loosen off with the pg, you run more risk of damaging yourself so be good! :)
