Placenta covering OS - help!!!! I'm going on holiday in three weeks!

I'm not sure whether I even want to post this thread or not in fear of the reality!
We booked a holiday of a life time before getting pregnant (which wasn't planned) to Disneyland Florida for my two girlies who just adore princesses!, it's cost us an arm and a leg as it was a one off! And it's my DD birthday out there and have the whole thing planned and booked!

I had my 20 week scan last week and have been panicking ever since! The fact that we found out we were having a boy was the best news I have ever had as my first two are girls and they'd love a brother!
But on my scan the sonographer said my placenta is covering my OS and is written on my notes! And I have a cyst on my ovary measuring 3.5cm. I also had a prolapse at the beginning of my pregnancy and am now scared to death of A) not being able to go on our holiday of a lifetime and B) what the rest of this pregnancy may hold for me!!

Am I being unrealistic thinking I still may go or worrying too much about nothing? I'll be 24 weeks when we fly!

Please help!!!!!!

That's good!

Does having placenta previa cause pain or is that my pelvis/ligaments/cyst?? I'm worried now I'm doing too much, but with my two and just school runs ect, it's impossible!!

How about if I bleed, and my cervix is slightly open, and I have strep b? Will it get in? I'm sure that can harm baby?

Coppernoddle - ime it doesn't cause any pain - that's just other things.

I think it will depend upon your consultant, but mine wouldn't let me travel without noting all hospitals/a&e depts along the way (and that was in the UK). Although I never bled. I doubt a long haul flight would have met with her approval.

Obviously, you might get different advice from your doctors.

Since I got my news yesterday - no travelling outside Uk unless placenta moves up - I have been reading and asking around. Seems to me there are 3 reasons why I am not allows to travel.

  1. Haemorraging is sudden and can lose a lot of blood quickly. Dangerous for mother and baby if trapped in a plane
  1. Out of contact with good medical care necessarily if remote
  1. Chances of premature baby because of early labour with bleeding - away from home not great

Trying to reason myself into accepting the loss of two planned holidays involving lost money (were not yer insured) and disappointment and messing other peoples plans up too.

Probably enough from me!

Thankyou! We'll see what happens on Tuesday, I'm hoping they'll scan me again to see what's going on! I even got my dollars yesterday! Couldn't bring myself to telling the girls we might not be going! Will leave it till we definitely go! But we will be sensible about it, I'm not going to just jump on a plane if being told no! Oh the stress!

Don't wish to frighten you but when I was rushed to theatre on one occasion the doctors said they would only have 4 minutes to save me if the bleed turned into a heavy one. I was pumped full of steroids from 28 weeks to strengthen baby's lungs. In the end I was lucky & I managed to hang on for planned c section at 36 weeks. Please be aware this us a very dangerous condition. & yes it was a complete sex ban!

I had placenta previa with my DS and had an ELCS as a result. It's not as high risk as Vasa previa, so I was allowed to stay at home. All they said was "any bleeding, phone 999." I didn't bleed and had my nice calm c section at 38+5. Hope you manage to get your costs back on insurance - if you went on hols, and delivered, it'd almost certainly be by CS which would mean you wouldn't be able to fly for at least 6 weeks. Best of luck.

I think it's because my husband and family have no idea how serious it is so I think I'm fine! Walked a tiny little round Manchester tonight and had a little pink stain in my pants, really tine, Came downstairs and told my hubby and sister and they both said, nothing to worry about! So just sat relaxing now! I can hardly walk with my pelvis and cyst pain but don't know whether that's because it's my third and things are on the move! My sister said, don't worry, you can bleed from anywhere and don't believe everything you read on the internet! Think I might just be over reacting, then read sone of these threads and panic!
Had no idea it was a 999 call if you bleed, even if it's a little bit? How much blood do you gave go loose before you call 999?

I think you need to have a full and frank discussion with your obstetrician about the risks involved and what you can and can't do. And bleeding: simply ask yourself "am I bleeding?" If the answer is yes, phone at the very least your local labour ward. It's wise to have a very low toleration of blood in this instance.

Think I just need to relax now and stop reading!! I've scared myself to death, got immensely stressed over the thought of not going on holiday and can't think about anything else!!!

(big breath) And relax!!!!! :)

How did it go today?

Coppernoddle · 05/04/2011 18:33

Well, good and bad news! It is grade 4 but there letting me go! They explained which made things much clearer! The placenta is split into two parts. The upper part which is used at the moment and the lower part which is covering my cervix. The upper part is what is being used as the lower part doesn't develop until after 30 weeks which is why people start bleeding after 30 weeks. So because I'll just hit 26 weeks when I get back he said that the risk is a lot lower! After 30 weeks is anybodys guess, that why the don't scan you till 32 weeks as the lower part hasn't formed yet so won't move off until then if it was going to move! The pain I've been having is spd, so they are going to give me physio before I go, give me a belt and a stick. I said should I rest and he said to be honest no, as the more you sit down the more chance you have of developing deep vein thrombosis so keep pottering, not too strenuous and no lifting, sex etc. The midwife said that the placenta is pretty tough and the weight at this stage won't effect it. She said that all I've heard are the bad stories of grade 4 and not the positive ones, which I guess she's right, reading the Internet absolutely freaked me out!! At least I'm prepared for the worst, went over everything him!
So now, I'm less stressed and really looking forward to my holiday which I will take it easy, think spd will make sure of that! But at least I get to see my girls faces when we go for Disney breakfast and get made up at the bippidy boppidy boutique!! I can now buy some clothes!!
I guess there still a chance I could bleed but would be less serious as the lower part hasn't formed so feel a lot more at ease with the whole situation! What happens after 30 weeks, no one knows!!
Lovebendics, I think you were very unlucky but am definatly aware of the risks, maybe not to the extent of your understanding, I guess ignorance is bliss sometimes! I'll take all mmy notes with me and make sure everybody knows my blood group! Thank you for your concern x x
