Does an extremely active baby stay active once they are born?

I'm 26+4 and this baby has been going crazy since 17wks, it never stops, sometimes I actually think there are a few in there and it seems to poke every part of my bump, its actually visible from the outside and when im wearing clothes, i've also cried out a few times (not good when im in a meeting). I was just wondering is this a sign of things to come and does it mean the baby will be generally very active/hyper and not a calm peaceful one???

Ha, your post made me smile (in a good way!!)
My first born was VERy active in the womb, so much so that I recall ringing the labour ward at around 30 weeks at 3am because babe had literally not stopped dancing around inside for hours & I couldnt sleep. I was genuinely worried something was wrong with him!! Labour ward asked the usual first Q: is this your first baby? Go to bed and stop worrying!
However, once he was born, he SLEPT FOR ENGLAND!!! So much so, we were readmitted back into hospital when he was a week old because I got in such a pickle that he was never awake and wouldnt feed because he was too sleepy. Yet again, me being paranoid, all was fine, but he really has been THE best sleeper EVER (compared to my 2nd born, a girl, who has only just slept through at 2years old!). He slept all night long, then slept for hours in the day too...heaven!! Although I didnt appreciate it at the time - I wanted him to be awake so I could show him off to everyone, spent much time prodding and poking him to wake up during the day. How daft am i?!!
So dont worry, activity in the womb doesnt (in my case anyway!) seem to correlate to baby's activity levels once they're born!

DS was an active one when I was pregnant, bopping about virtually 24/7 or so it seemed at the time! When he was born he was the laziest little lump you could ever imagine. He slept right through his first night and was sleeping through every night by six weeks. I used to have to wake him to feed him because he'd sleep right through the day too. I could lift him from carseat to pram to Moses basket to cot to bouncy chair to bath to bed and he'd not wake up once.

Of course it all changed at around eight months and now he's 18 months he's on the go all day long.

My dd was active and is very energetic! She has always slept well at night though as she never stops when she's awake!

BeeBopBunny · 29/03/2011 12:13

Oh yes! DD's only calm day since conception was the day she was born. Lively ones are great fun though...

I had twins, the more active of the two was the most chilled out placid baby and his brother who was completely still except for the occasional hiccups was a crazy baby, really wriggly. That being said once they got to around 1 they swapped again and now the one who was wriggly inutero is the more flighty active mischeivious one so I don't think it means anything on particular.

bit of a mixed bag there - looks like i'll just have to wait and c, but maybe all that moving about for months will tire the LO out and they will sleep well when they come out to recover Wink

My wriggly baby is now a very wriggly 9 month old! He just never stops unless he's eating or sleeping.
DS2- I'm 24 weeks, he's not quite as wriggly but could have 16 weeks to change all that!

I have twins. My boy was very quiet in the womb and I use to worry about the lack of movement from him. My girl was so active and kept me awake at night. 8 years on and things are pretty much the same! Grin

Notinmykitchen · 29/03/2011 14:33

My now 3 year old DS was very active while I was pregnant, did nothing but sleep for his first few months, then went back to very active again, and has stayed that way ever since. Still likes his sleep, but doesn't stop for a second while he is awake.

RockLover · 29/03/2011 14:37

My 7 wk old DS had alternate crazily active days and then scarily quiet ones when in the womb. The day before he was born he went mad and wriggled for England, even the midwives couldn't believe how much he was moving. Turned out the little sod was turning himself back to back after being in the right position for months...grrrr.

Anyway I digress; he is an extremely active baby when awake, he is forever kicking his legs or waving his arms about and has extremely good head control. All the medical professionals have commented on how strong he is! Saying that, he still sleeps quite a bit and is giving us 4-5 hour un-broken stretches during the night.

thegrandsophy · 29/03/2011 15:06

Well with my n=2, first one wriggled non stop in utero and pretty much continued this pattern once evicted. Always had to be on the move and was not the ...er...best of sleepers. 2nd one hardly moved inside, fab sleeper from word go and v placid. Late to sit and walk. Will finish off my scientific expt with no 3 later this year.

buttonmoon78 · 29/03/2011 16:19

No correlation at all in my experience.

All mine have been monster movers in utero. 1&3 were very placid and laid back and slept through at 6 wks and 14 wks respectively. 2 was still laid back and placid but less so and didn't sleep through until 7-8 months.

#4 is also v active but I'll have to wait until July to see what happens with afterwards!
