How many newborn outfits do i need?

I have 2 newborn outfits already and lots of babygros.
How many outfits does a newborn need, as i would prefer to just keep the babygros as pyjamas for the night time...?

I would say allow for 2 changes a day at least, then it depends how often you are going to be washing as to how many you will need over a week.

I was a babygro person, so had very few outfits, DS is 6 months almost and is in outfits during the day now and I change him about twice a day but he is weaning so a mucky pup.

it depends on your baby.

Some babies are small and petite, new born clothes may swamp them at first and may need tiny baby clothes for a week or 2, and then be in newborn size for a month or more.

Other babies are born only just fitting in, or even already too big for size new born, so if that was the case for you you wouldnt need any more newborn size.

also when very tiny they eat / sleep / poo (which in the early days often requires a complete change of clothes) The 1st few days / weeks the babygrows are the most practical thing to dress them in as they sleep so much, and are easy to put on and comfortable for baby.

I suggest buying plenty of 0-3 size as well as newborn, as baby will grow into it quite soon anyway, and may end up wearing it almost straight away.

Can always buy more newborn stuff if you need it, and bear in mind you will probably be given lots of bits too Smile

that's a good question, too, actually, does it matter if your baby is swamped by the clothes?
is it worth buying the 0-3 instead of newborn, or is it bad if the baby is too small for the clothes?

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 28/03/2011 13:37

TBH I've never come across a baby that was standard newborn size at birth but hugely, drastically swamped by 0-3, particularly when you consider the difference in sizing between even Mothercare and Asda 0-3 months. So yes, a few newborn sizes until you see whether you have at tiny/standard/huge baby but for things like bodies I wouldn't worry about going to 0-3 straight away as long as they aren't teeny IYSWIM.

There won't be a difference between 'daytime' clothes and 'nightime' clothes for a few weeks. There are clean clothes and clothes which have been sicked up or pooped on.

i expected (and got) a fairly large baby - 8lb13, so got a pack of 1month sleepsuits, pack of 0-3 sleepsuits, vests and a few outfits. you can always get smaller outfits when baby arrives if they are tiny but if you buy tiny/new baby outfits and get a chunky baby then you might squeeze them on once before they go into storage!

i had a sleeping gown for night time - the bottom half has elastic round so you just pull down over baby's legs so is much easier for nappy changes when you're half asleep and only have a small lamp on to see what you're doing. i then got shed loads of outfits as presents so hardly needed to buy anything for the first 12months! leggings with feet are also great - much easier nappy changes with no poppers and no socks to get lost.

0-3 would have looked silly on mine especially my DD she was only 5lb 13oz and was still in tiny baby clothes at the 3 months.

I didn't know she was going to be small so only had newborn nappies and clothes, but managed until DH had managed to nip to the shop and get a couple of tiny baby items. And then family bought a few bits and these did her for quite a few months, then I had the newborn and 0-3 already.

When is baby due? If in summer, then clothes will wash and dry fairly quickly.
DS was skinny, skinny but tall. Rattled around in 0-3 months, but grew out of anything with feet very quickly.

I had about 6 0-3month baby grows and vests. DS was swampped by then for a day until Granny went crazy in Mothercare.

In my experience, newborns needs about 3 changes of clothes every 24 hours.

Bear in mind that different shops are drastically different size wise. Next 1 month is far smaller than John Lewis newborn which starts from 8lb. I was told by everyone to buy 0-3 as newborn would
be too small. I bought very few newborn bits and as DS was quite pukey for the first couple of weeks, what I had was nowhere near enough. He is now a month old and is growing out of the newborn stuff. Had I known improbably would have bought some newborn stuff cheaply from eBay or a supermarket as I did need it but it hasn't lasted long.

As everyone has said, babies vary so much in shape and size and so do the sizings between shops. So probably best to start off with just enough for the first few days (ie until you can send someone off shopping!) and work out from there what you need. DD could still wear some newborn babygros at 7 months!

NCT said to mainly go for sleepsuits when they're newborn- most young babies live in them...get about 10 at least..
