Palpatations what's the cause?

Yesterday I had a number of 'episodes' where I couldn't continue with what I was doing and had to sit down until it went away.

I'm 16+3 weeks with number two so have been very tired as dd is waking at night/getting up early.

Should I be worried?

Get checked for anaemia would be my first thought :)

LoveBeingKnockedUp · 28/03/2011 10:20

Thanks harry, hadn't thought of that.

Could it be caffeine?

I get palpitations when I drink caffeine, and it's worse when I'm pregnant.

Hope you find the cause soon, it's not a pleasant feeling, is it?!

MrsBloomingTroll · 28/03/2011 11:39

I had some during pregnancy with DD1 and some during labour with her, so was monitored for a while, but they went away and haven't returned (so far).

I think it's just extra stress on your body due to pregnancy, probably worth mentioning in your next midwife/GP appointment.

I also get low blood pressure, low blood sugar and am borderline anaemic, if that helps.

Hi

I've these on and off for a few years (my mum had them too) and even though they can be scary, they are generally harmless. I've been checked out in the past and been told that practically everyone gets them, just some people don't notice them, and that they are a variation of normal. I was told they are common during childbearing years, and many women get them in pregnancy also.

Definitely talk to your GP, he/she will give you some reassurance.

Hope that helps, in the meantime, try not to worry.

I had loads during 1st pregnancy around 16 week mark - in my case think it was linked to anxiety of waiting for 16 week abnormality bloods - saying that i do suffer with palpatations a lot anyway - all investigations normal but very uncomfotable and scary at times

G1nger · 28/03/2011 13:59

I've been getting them on and off for weeks, and I'm only at 14 weeks. The times I don't have them are the times I have more energy (and can, for example, go to the gym). I just put them down to fatigue for now.

Thanks jojo I dint really have much, 1-2 cups if tea and a glass of coke. I had a large amount of coke the day before but that won't effect me the next day would it?

I've been experiencing these 2nd time round (didn't in first) and I've found it's a combination of caffeine (just one class of coke will do it for me), empty tummy, tiredness and low iron.

jojodancer · 28/03/2011 15:55

LoveBeingKnockedUp that really could be enough to do it. I only drink 1 cup of coffee in a morning and that's enough for me.

I also used to work with someone (male, so nothing to do with pregnancy!) who couldn't touch caffeine and was hospitalised with palpitations when someone accidently gave him a full-caffeine coffee.

LoveBeingKnockedUp · 28/03/2011 20:36

Really the next day though?

love I've been having that with breathlessness - it's a bit scary but when I consulted Dr Google at 2am today apparently it's 'normal' Confused

PinkFondantFancy · 29/03/2011 15:16

Also love are you still on progesterone pessaries? I am and I wonder if they are causing some of it as the placenta must be producing lots of progesterone now too. I've got to go to the clinic tomorrow anyway so I'll ask the Dr and let you know.

I am 14 weeks and have been having really bad palpitations. I was getting them a now and again before I got pregnant but they have become a lot worse. Some days I can't do anything without getting them, like washing up or going up stairs. I have even cut out caffeine completely, and there has been no improvement. I have seen a cardiologist who says they don't sound very sinister and he expects it be nothing, but is sending me for some tests just to make sure. He did say that when you're pregnant your heartbeat does beat faster anyway and this may make normal irregular beats more noticeable.
I find it very scary and frustrating but I think the best thing to do is rest, and if you are worried then speak to a doctor to make sure.

NewMummy5July2011 · 29/03/2011 19:42

Hi everyone
Just wanted to say if you are getting them badly, sometimes making yourself cough can stop them, as can holding your nose and blowing hard - appararently settles the vegas nerve which I guess can contribute to them. Switching position, and just trying to breathe evenly. Sometimes getting them can create anxiety which in turn makes them worse!
Hope this helps
xx

LoveBeingKnockedUp · 29/03/2011 21:04

I had these quite frequently after 16 weeks, and palpitations would be going so fast, I could'nt breathe properly and fainted on two occasions. I only found out later on that lying on my back was a big no no as it presses the weight onto your spine. Also sitting completely upright in a chair could set me off. The only thing that relieved the palpitations if i felt them starting, was to lie down on my side, till they passed. Good luck.

LoveBeingKnockedUp · 29/03/2011 21:53

Thanks higher. I did have really bad dizzy spells with dd and have mild ones loads now.
