threadworms driving me insane- how long will it take to cure myself?

So, we realised dd has threadworms last night. We have today treated her with ovex and also dh and ds but as I'm pg I can't have it:( :(. I have had a couple of instances of an itchy bottom in the last couple of weeks but tried to banish any thoughts of worms. But just now I reckon I've found a worm so I have got it. Ooh it's so disgusting and IRRITATING. How long will it take me to get rid of this with no medication? It's not fair, I've had it before and Ovex got rid of it so quickly. I am also a slightly constipated (have been all pg but glugging prune juice to control it) which I'm guessing won't help matters. Please someone tell me I won't have to put up with this for 6 weeks! I am aware I'm being a bit dramatic here but I'm just so dreading weeks of itching and endless washing!!

Having worms increases the healthy bacteria in your gut, and thus strengthens your immune system...accommodating them in your intestines for a few weeks will do wonders for your long term health !!!

If you can't bear the thought of this, apparently eating lots of raw cabbage eliminates them within hours. They seem to find raw cabbage rather toxic, but you do need to eat at least a whole one.

Good luck !

Maybe use a pg safe anti itching cream/ gel at night to stop you scratching in your sleep?

Ah it's good to see the positives Goodbyepinot is that really true?

Might try the cabbage thing- will be making some homemade coleslaw tomorrow then!

Hari, read this news article, news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3287733.stm

As for the cabbage, I have read of this a few times being able to eliminate worms, but I think even if you're desperate, munching a whole raw cabbage is going to be some superhuman feat !!

It won't take 6 weeks iirc of itching etc. 6 weeks is the full cycle. So there should be a few days of itching now then if you can break the cycle then that might be it. Other tips (which you may already be doing):

wear pants at night
scrub your fingers with a nail brush as soon as you get up in the morning
put vaseline on your bottom hole before going to bed (or if yours are early risers Wink at tea time!)
have a bath ideally am & pm
wash your sheets v regularly and on 60c
don't bite your nails or the skin around them (like I do Blush)

Happy days. I've not had them this time, but with 3 dcs it truly is I've not had them this time yet. 18 weeks to go!

'In the case of an existing infection, grinding a pod of garlic and mixing a half of pinch of the paste with petroleum jelly and applying it around the anus helps kill the eggs.'

'Consuming capsules with natural extracts from the seeds of grapefruit or a powder of pumpkin seeds mixed with honey are also said to eliminate threadworms.'

'Another one of the effective home remedies for pinworms is the consumption of freshly grated coconuts and castor oil. Simply consume a spoon of grated coconut and then after about three hours, follow it up with a spoon of castor oil.'

'Consume raw garlic, pumpkin seeds, beets and carrots, or try a mix of honey and papaya seeds.'

All from some home remedy sites... (good luck)

Wash all bedding, damp mop all floors, vacuum and dispose of vacuum bag. Trim everyone's nails and make sure hand washing is done frequently, especially before eating. If anyone bites their nails, apply something nasty-tasting to the nails.

Grin at no 1 suggestion mathanxiety. It'll probably kill anything within a hundred yards!

mathanxiety · 28/03/2011 18:28

You'd get a seat all to yourself on the bus anyway Wink

take cina - homeopathic remedy for this. It does work just not as quickly as ovex. Wash all your sheets, bedding and nightclothes and make sure to clean your hands carefully.
