Cadmum · 27/10/2005 17:32

Paracetamol...

skinnycow · 27/10/2005 17:32

paracetamol and a massage

Cadmum · 27/10/2005 17:41

I have resorted to taking Nurophen during the second trimester with a really bad headache. I think that the reason it is not highly recommended is because it thins the blood so not good close to delivery...

startingtobehalloweenylover · 27/10/2005 17:46

take paracetamol.

GeorgieVickyLou · 27/10/2005 17:47

Also drink lots of water, i was told that a lot headaches are caused by being dehydrated (probably not what you want to hear when PG - but it might help)

hoolagirl · 27/10/2005 21:17

Cadmum, is the reason you can't take blood thinning painkillers because it may cause bleeding in the baby?
I don't want to be a scaremonger, but please check with midwife.

misdee · 27/10/2005 21:20

does neorofen thin the blood? i know aspirin does, but not sure about neorofen/ibruprofen.

Mum2OneAndBump · 27/10/2005 21:21

I would never take anything but paracetamol whilst pg not worth the risk in my eyes!

startingtobehalloweenylover · 27/10/2005 21:23

misdee the active ingredient is the same! my dad can't take nurofen/ibuprofen because he is allergic to aspirin

hunkerpumpkin · 27/10/2005 21:23

Just googled and founr this re ibuprofen:

"During the first two trimesters of pregnancy ibuprofen is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby during the first two trimesters of pregnancy. However, ibuprofen should not be taken late in pregnancy (the third trimester) because a similar drug is known to affect the baby's heart. Do not take ibuprofen without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment."

misdee · 27/10/2005 21:25

but peter would've been allowed ibroprofen with his heart problem whilst taking warfarin but not asperin, thats why i wondered about the blood thinning. AFAIK it doesnt thin the blood. peter couldnt take it as he is asmatic.

QueenVictoria · 27/10/2005 21:25

how are you today hunker? Feeling better?

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 27/10/2005 21:28

No, no ibuprofen while pregnant. You could try one of those cool and sooth patches as well if you liked. Might help.

karmamother · 27/10/2005 21:47

Nurofen is in the same drug category as aspirin...they are non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)& should NEVER be used in pregnancy. No doctor will ever recommend or allow them to be used whilst PG. Cocodamol is allowed, however.

With regard to it thinning blood, it has been shown to increase bleeding in the intra-op period. During some operations, NSAIDS are given at the anaesthetists discretion but they are now used less & less because of the risk of increased bleeding. They are given post-op, though.

HTH

Mum2OneAndBump · 27/10/2005 21:56

Well i suffered from severe headaches in my first 2-3 months and saw the doctor on many occassions crying with the pain, he would not allow me to take anything but paracetamol in the first 8 weeks and then he prescribed me the Cocodamol as i could not take anymore, he showed me the "dictionary" thing they have to prove i was allowed these as i did not want to risk anything.
