i know the cot matress has always been kept inside the house, never in the loft or garage or shed.
it is a mamas and papas for what its worth, wheevr that means anything i don't know

not sure what the guidelines are atm

but a bit under whever to use it or get a brand new one.

i've also seen what looks like a good buy on a travel system on ebay for about 30pounds.

what do you think?

I'd say as long as you give them a good wash at a decent temperature then they'll be fine!

carriedababi · 27/03/2011 19:09

do you think i should take the clothes out of the loft?, what would you call a decent temp? would 50degrees do?

Wigeon · 27/03/2011 19:23

Carriedababi - I'm sure second hand clothes won't cause cot death. Otherwise there would be a great number of NCT sales out of business! I think the point about mattresses is that the baby is actually lying right against the material, potentially breathing in the spores. But with clothes, you will be absolutely fine. We are re-using DD's old babygros etc for DC2 (due May) which have been in the loft for getting on for 3 years. Personally I think a 40 degree wash would be fine, but do 50 degrees if you want! I only took them out of the loft and started washing them all when I was 32 weeks pregnant (ie last week). Really don't stress about it.

The BBC story re cot death and mattresses has been disproved. The Sids and kids site linked to is up to date. I have read the research and am reusing the cot mattress for dd2.

argylesocks · 27/03/2011 19:36

does the same apply for moses basket mattresses, the plastic kind? It feels like foam inside but is wrapped in that thick plastic like a changing table mat. do those count as 'mattresses' (even though it's not exposed foam/springs) and therefore need to be new? If its covered in plastic I dont' see what the risk could be but I dont mind getting a new one if I'm supposed to...

ilovemountains · 27/03/2011 19:41

Also the NHS guidelines do not recommend a new mattress for each baby (this all applies to Moses baskets too).

bessie26 · 27/03/2011 19:54

Just looked at the FSID site, they say that IDEALLY you should have a new mattress, but it's ok to re-use as long as it has a waterproof cover.

nicolamumof3 · 27/03/2011 20:06

Yes I'm satisfied as already said to reuse our mattress

firstsupermum · 27/03/2011 20:23

i bought 2nd hand cot with mattress for my 1st child and and other one for my second from ebay both with cot, also bought a bed now for my first with mattress untill 5yers, they are in excellent condition, no problem.
