Hey,

Just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant and I am supposed to be going to Australia for a family wedding in 2 weeks - I am now really nervous but can't really cancel either. Also feel hugely anxious anyway that something is going to go wrong...

any advice?

I flew lots of times in my first trimester, a couple of those before I actually knew I was pregnant. However, they were only short-haul flights. I don't think it should be a problem, depending obvioulsy on how you feel physically, but I would recommend speaking to your midwife and/or GP to get their input in this.

Generally, the advice is to move around a lot during the flight and drink lots of fluids, as well as to wear the flight socks because you're more at risk for DVT.
I can recommend the travel bands/sea bands if you're feeling sick, they helped me a lot with my morning sickness.

I flew to the US when I was 6 weeks pregnant in September. There is no reason why you should experience any problems relating to your flight, but do wear compression stockings, keep well hydrated, walk up and down lots, and make sure you get plenty of rest when you arrive.

The worst thing for me was the nausea during periods of turbulence. I nearly threw up several times, so if you experience the same thing keep a sick bag to hand! And yes, Seabands would might help.

Thank you will go and find some seabands, I have a feeling I am going to need lots of sickbags as I constantly feel like I am going to projectile vomit whenever I talk

wish me luck!

I took about 3 or 4 flights in my first trimester; nothing as long-haul as that though. I consulted my doctor beforehand, and he assured me it was absolutely fine, provided I kept my fluids up and moved around regularly. All was fine, except for the routine vomiting throughout the flights... morning sickness combined with travel sickness does not make for a good combination Confused

Don't worry, you'll be fine. I flew to NZ when I was 11 weeks. I was perfectly ok, but really, really tired. Found the trip totally exhausting. Mind you, I usually dose up on valium on flights so that's probably why I found it so difficult!

Make it easy for yourself by taking loads of water on with you and getting an aisle seat. Take 'comfort' stuff like nice toiletries (I loved a spray mist for my face). Take one of those neck pillows so you can try and sleep.

And for the love of god go easy on the aeroplane food!! I didn't and was constipated for days. If I could do it again I'd eat mostly fruit and nuts, you will feel much better.

Another piece of advice would be to look up some natural remedies for jet lag, as this affected me very badly. There is advice like standing barefoot or swimming in the sea as soon as you get there, and exposing yourself to sunlight as soon as you can. No idea if these work (I looked them up afterwards) but I would try absolutely anything next time to avoid the jet lag I had as I found it really debilitating and it took me a good week to recover from.

Have a great time!

Hi I am 9+2 weeks pregnant, I asked the same question a few weeks ago, flew at 5 weeks and again at 7 weeks, everything seems to be going ok. just take the advice of the above posters. Smile
I was extremely wory i looked aried as I thought it might cause miscarriage, but what i found out is that the flying does not cause miscarriage and the only reason they might say not to fly before 12 weeks is because if you had a miscarriage away from home how would you feel, the way i looked at it was i was going to visit my mother and rest of my family so i would have been well supported, and I presume you will be surrounded by family if you are going to a family wedding.

Good luck, and have a great time...oh and CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy!! Grin
