carried twins to term and was worth every penny Wink Blush

Yes for about a week post-birth, numbs everything quite well if you are particularly sore

CBear6 · 24/03/2011 18:49

Far less horrific than the "home made" solution suggested by the midwife at the NHS ante-natal class when I was pregnant with DS. Worth it just to avoid that more than anything (but yes, it's good).

PipCarrier · 24/03/2011 19:11

What was the home made solution CBear?

Ok, I'm going to ask something in far too much detail here because I just don't quite get these feme pad things...so is the gauze cover absorbent? Because I bled quite heavily after my last birth and got through a pad in 2 hours, so I would imagine unless they're very absorbent you're only going to be able to have them on for 15 mins or so, or is that the idea?

Sorry to seem dense...

Last time I used to soak some maternity pads, keep them in the freezer and then press them on - absolute bliss, as is an iced bidet Blush

The home remedy was to get a condom, unroll it and fill it with that hand cleanser anti-bacterial gel, put it in the fridge for an hour and then pop it in your knickers. I never actually did it because just the idea made me feel a bit queasy.

PipCarrier · 24/03/2011 20:03

Lol! I was sore enough and desperate enough to have tried that last time so I'll bear it in mind!!

oggybags · 24/03/2011 21:28

woah, in comparison to jelly frozen condoms they are tres chic!! Thanks I'm off to click click purchase now
pray they come in subtle postal packaging Blush

ok, so what are they? Confused

are they like the gel pads you can have in the fridge for your eyes - but for your underbeneaths after birth?

misty0 · 24/03/2011 21:41

and yeah - are they absorbent?? Or do you put them in with a pad?? I'm picturing me sitting on piles of things in my knickers! lol

CBear6 · 24/03/2011 22:27

You only use it for about an hour at a time (because who wants frostbitten bits?) and the little gauze sleeve you get is strong enough to absorb for that long, I found it struggled a bit after about an hour because it would thaw and the moisture/condensation from that would make the gauze even less absorbent. The gel pouch needs a clean afterwards in hot soapy water before refreezing it.

Much better than a condom icicle!

Can I recommend Mothercare winged maternity pads too? I found them to be much thinner than other maternity pads (especially those vile green-backed pillows the hospital provides) but still absorbent, the wings really made a difference, and the material was nice and soft on my stitches without snagging or itching.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 25/03/2011 09:35

maternity pads look soooooooooooo thick! does it feel like you're wearing a nappy? lol
how long do u have to wear them for?
ahhh!

CBear6 · 25/03/2011 09:50

They are a bit like pillows. At the very least you need them for the first week, and especially the first few days when the bleeding is heaviest. Always Ultra just aren't up to the job and supposedly it's easier to spot signs of infection or other complications with a maternity pad than with a regular pad.

I used the Mothercare pads for a week then when they ran out I used Always nighttime because they were really long and they were fine because the bleeding was lighter by that point and then had stopped entirely by two weeks.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 25/03/2011 09:54

ok thats not too bad. Not looking forward to it though...

nenevomito · 25/03/2011 09:56

I used Feme pads for both DSs. you wear them between the towel and yourself. The gauze covers just make it more comfortable to wear.

As someone who was so sore she could hardly sit down, I thought they were bloody fantastic.

I'd also recommend Kotex Night-time as the ultimate post baby towel. Soft, Long and stick properly to your pants!!
