Confused by dates

Oh dearie me I've got all confused.

My last period date was 11/2/11.

This makes me 6+4.

I've been following what's happening to the little mite and am I in week 6 (grows from appleseed to pea) or week 7 (grows from pea to blueberry)?

And if I can tell people from week 12, does that mean the start of week 12 (2/5/11) or the end of it (9/5/11)?

thanks
katy

Thats up to you! If you are waiting until week 12 (I tried to do that but failed - oops!) then maybe wait until after your first scan?

Don't worry about how many weeks you are now. Google Due Date Calculator and enter the date of your last period in there. It will give you an estimate to work with. This is the same one that your GP will also give you when you go there. At your first scan, they'll date you more closely and may adjust by a few days. I told a few close relatives/friends in advance of my first scan (at approx 12 weeks), but waited until after it before telling others. And congratulations!

When you get given your due date at your scan, work back from that and tell them from that date. I am due on sunday 22nd may so I start my 32 weeks on sunday. Hope that makes sense. You'll get the hang of it, also your midwife will write it down everytime she sees you how far along you are.

Katy, If the 1st day of your LMP was 11/1/11, you're five days behind me, so (assuming your UCL is 28d) you're due 18/11/11 and today you're 5+6. There is a good EDD calc on MN, on the NHS website or on BBC's health section - identical to what your GP & MW will do... But basically you count 40wks from the start of your LMP.
Call your GP practice to find out whether they want you to see your GP first or if you go straight to MW - this is dependent on how they do it in your area.
When & who to tell is entirely up to you - I have had to tell key people at work for strategic and H&S reasons already, but am waiting to tell my parents and friends until we're a little further along as I'm concerned about getting hopes up. The reason for not telling until week 12 is that the risk of MC falls after this date; you won't usually have your NHS abnormality scan until 18-20wks.
Congratulations!

It's also worth noting that people talk about weeks differently that is, if someone says they're six weeks pregnant, they usually mean they've just finished their sixth week of pregnancy ie, they're 6w0d.

But I've also heard people (and seen it especially on US sites) say that they're in their seventh week when they're 6w2d, 6w4d, or whatever -- basically, once you get to the end of that week you've finished your seventh week, and are therefore seven weeks pregnant at 7w0d, if that makes sense.

ahhh... urbandaisy that makes perfect sense.. the app I'm comparing to on my iphone is american and totally confused me!!

Here you go: www.nhs.uk/Planners/pregnancycareplanner/Pages/DueDateCalculator.aspx This gave me the same due date (and length progress) that my GP gave me with her handheld dial thing. They'll fine-tune (or confirm) your date at your first scan.

urbandaisy · 25/03/2011 07:15

It did me too at first, KatyN! I think the What to Expect app is the worst offender, but I suppose it does make you feel like you're getting somewhere, especially in the early weeks!
