Maternity cozzie - essential or no?

So I'm sitting on the side of the pool watching DS swim with his Nana, sweating my backside off, and being generally surplus to requirements.

I would love to be in the water but my regular cozzie is too tight now (I know because I spent 20 minutes swearing at it and feared DH would have to cut me out with scissors).

Is a maternity costume really needed or can I get away with just buying a size or two bigger than normal?

I very much suspect it's needed. Isn't a normal but larger costume going to stretch in all the wrong places?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2011 16:35

I had a maternity tankini that was v comfy

Normal ones in a couple of sizes bigger won't be the right shape for a pregnant lady, only for non pregnant ones who are a couple of sizes bigger than you.

CBear6 · 23/03/2011 16:38

I thought as much, all the ones I like are non-maternity - typical!

Where did you get the tankini from IWIWMO? Something like that would be ideal.

I got a tankini from Mothercare. About £25 but has been great and I actually look forward to swimming so I can put it on!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2011 16:55

I think it was from Jojo maman bebe or Blloming Marvellous. It was a few years ago so I can't remember for sure, sorry

mrsravelstein · 23/03/2011 16:57

any sort of 2 piece should work fine, i just wore a bikini a size or 2 bigger

nicolamumof3 · 23/03/2011 21:00

a two piece may work from non maternity? especially if a bikini i'd say?

but i love my jojo swimming cossi the tankini i had from them was uncomfortable and would ride up and just felt horrible. I feel really comfortable in this one and look forward to swimming now. I go twice a week by myself and take my youngest once a week so its getting worn three times a week so worth every penning with free del and mnet £10pc discount.

Try ASOS as well, I got my maternity tankini from there, it's bright pink and I love it!!

saldoozer · 23/03/2011 21:32

I second ASOS, i got a very reasonably priced maternity tankini from there

Hi I went hunting for one tonight as was meeting a friend for a swim and dont fit in my size 10 bikini anymore :( :(
I went to Matalan and got a lovely maternity swimsuit. It fits perfectly , also as I am tall it is a godsend as normal swimming costumes are never long enough for me , so this is great as it has a lovely long body. For £12 it was a bargain! It survived the swim and I felt very comfortable in it, although was surrounded by skinny ladies in their size 8/10 bodies, which made me feel sad as I hope I get my figure back asap as always looked great in a bikini :( its weird not having control of my changing figure!

I tried my regular swimsuit on when I was about 15w (and already very bump-y) and found that the tummy part was pulled forward so much that the swimsuit gaped embarrasingly at the legs.

I found a maternity tankini very good. I get HUGE, and it accommodated me and was easy to put on and take off, even at the end.

If you are normally fairly slim, you may find that an ordinary two-piece will work for you, but I definitely needed the maternity shaping.

CrispyTheCrisp · 23/03/2011 21:59

My Maternity cozzie was from Blooming Marvellous. It had a gather on each side and looked really nice on - like it fitted properly rather than an ill fitting one a few sizes too large

hellymelly · 23/03/2011 22:04

I wore a bikini, and bought it in the bra size I needed at the time, with shorties that fitted under my bump.I also had a swimsuit from Boden in a size 14 (I was an 8-10 when i got pregnant, but did put on a decent amount of padding) it had little shortie legs and some bust support,it was great for the middle trimester, but wouldn't have fitted over my bump past 7m.

Habbibu · 23/03/2011 22:05

Mine (speedo) was fine throughout, and I was HUGE. But it was a short legsuit type, so maybe got away with more.

79monica · 23/03/2011 22:13

I have got this one and I love it. It's not as cheap as some others but I wanted a costume with shorts not knickers and you can usually find some discount codes for Figleaves if you google them. I have been wearing it since I was about 20 weeks and my non-maternity tankini was leaving an embarrassing amount of stomach showing. Just watch out for the sizing - it's all Australian sizing although there is a conversion chart on the site I think (38 = UK 14).

bessie26 · 23/03/2011 22:25

For my first pg I just bought my normal (speedo) swimsuit in bigger sizes which seemed to work ok (only wore it upto 33wks though)

This time I bought a maternity tankini and I love it, I'm quite long in the torso but this is still fitting over my bump at almost 37wks and is much more comfy than a one piece Grin

CBear6 · 24/03/2011 08:52

I'm going to Matalan today so I'm going to have a look at theirs, might pop next door to Mothercare too.

Thanks for the tips :)

I second the Matalan recommendation. I only a costume from there at 30 weeks but it still fits now at 40 weeks! There is a gap in the material from the knicker part and top part so it can grow with you. Even now though you can't see my bump, its just there so its not tight, if that makes sense. Only £12.00 too, bargain!

LostInTransmogrification · 24/03/2011 09:20

I got a tummy control one piece from M&S in a size 16 (normally a 12) and it was great up till about seven months and then I use it now after the birth. They have it again this year, blue with White spots.
