If your baby was breech at 24 weeks when did it turn (if at all)?

Humour me - I'm 24 weeks pg with DC2 and I know my baby has loads of time to turn but I'm mildly panicking as absolutely terrified of the thought of a C-section.

Any tips on how to get a breech baby to turn would also be gratefully received.

Thanks :)

Def much better chance in second pg of baby turning. Friend had 2nd baby turn the day before scheduled ecv (mind you, she did have moxibustion and slept with a torch up her fanjo Grin).

You would be sitting/lying most of the time in the first few weeks post-cs, so as long as you ds can climb onto a bed/sofa, he should get plenty of cuddles.

I really don't think breech at 24 weeks means anything - I'm sure your midwife would say the baby might well turn upright...and then breech again....and then upright again. Means nothing. I don't know why they even tell you at that stage since you either won't mind, or you'll stress.

FWIW my baby (due May) was breech at the last but one midwife appointment (28 weeks I think) and not breech at the most recent one (32 weeks). And the midwife said that breech at 28 weeks was meaningless as the baby was still squiggling around in there loads - just happened to be breech on the day she checked.

silken - if sleeping with a torch up my fanjo avoids a CS then that's what I'll do Grin but will wait a few more weeks before going to those lengths.

Thanks Wigeon that's helpful - I think I should have told the GP how worried I was about the baby being breech then she could have reassured me like your midwife did you. I'll definitely ask lots of questions at the next appointment if the baby is still breech. He/she is squiggling (great word!) around a lot at the moment so maybe he/she is doing somersaults and I just don't know about it.

Babycentre (reliable website with facts checked by medical professionals says that most babies turn head down by the 8th month of pregnancy, and only 3-4% are breech at the end. So there is plenty of time if you are 24 weeks. And they only start trying to turn a baby at 36 weeks, presumably because before then if you turned a breech baby it might just swivle round back again!

Try not to worry just yet! I could give you a whole bunch of more worrying things to worry about (am on second baby), but I won't Grin!

JimmyChoo17 · 23/03/2011 22:33

Ooo I wondered this as baby has mostly been breech and innerly 24 weeks.

Have heard using one of those gym balls helps....how I don't know maybe someone can advise??

Either that or might need to sterilise the maglite torch hahaha! Brilliant post OP!

JimmyChoo17 · 23/03/2011 22:35

Not innerly I am nearly! Stupid text!!

Would you definitely want a cs if it's your second and you delivered the first spontaneously? Breech babies tend to be small and usually come early to give themselves the best chance.

Wigeon makes a good point though, 24 weeks is far too early to start worrying. My ob/gyn didn't start muttering about cs until 32 weeks and then only said "if she hasn't turned by next appt..."

Glad it made you laugh Bicnod, we mostly ended up collapsed in a giggling heap Grin
It's something to look back fondly on, especially as it worked for us.

Just to enhance the ridiculous image, one day mid operation our landlord popped in (we lived in an annexe so right next door, no warning). We jumped up and DH sorted the torch but I couldn't get to the walkman without inner fumbling, so we had a whole painting-the-outside-of-the-house-soon conversation and cuppa with the faint and tinny sound of 'prrrooomise me you'll wait for me/ I'll be saving all my love for yoooouuuu' coming from my pants.

So, errr, lock your door if you try this at home.

LOADS of time to turn yet...tons of babies are breech at this stage- absolutely no need to worry yet.

My baby turned breech at 30 weeks, and I thought I was headed for a possible ECV but then she turned at 34 weeks- at that stage because she was so big, it felt like the cycle of a washing machine!!! Horrible sensation...

I'm sure you'll be fine, only 3-4% of ALL babies remain in a breech position at full term...

FrogmellaMoonbeam · 24/03/2011 15:51

Hi Bicnod, as you may possibly just maybe not very likely remember from way back when, when we were April mums-to-be I went in at 36 weeks for an ECV to have V turned and whilst they were faffing about deciding whether to keep me in and induce me (which they finally did!) she kindly turned all on her own so I wouldnt panic yet there is plenty of time xXx

lilly13 · 24/03/2011 19:07

mine turned at 28 weeks, but i did lots of yoga and swimming...

Bicnod · 24/03/2011 19:20

silken - I would rather give a breech vaginal birth a go but I don't know if they would allow it at my hospital as apparently there are very few midwives who have experience of delivering breech births these days. Would definitely explore that as an option if it came down to it.

Vodka - that is hilarious Grin - do you think he noticed?!

Leila and wigeon - thanks for the stats - it helps to know that, rationally, it is very unlikely my baby will remain breech.

JimmyChoo - I used a gym ball towards the end of my previous pg to help get the head engaged, and during the first stage of labour to move things along. Just sat on it upright and sort of rotated my hips while watching episodes of the office listening to my hypnobirthing CD. But that was with a head down baby - not sure how you'd use a gym ball to turn a breech baby so would be interested if anyone knows?!

Frogmella - my lovely fellow April mum! You're right - I really should stop worrying about it - I didn't realise V turned so late (was a bit rubbish at keeping up with the ante-natal thread) - will attempt to switch the panic button off! x

lilly - I did loads of swimming and pilates when pg with DS1 but just don't seem to have the time this time around :( Have started doing the cat stretches and inversions recommended earlier up the thread so hopefully that will help.

Thanks so much for all your reassurances - it really has helped a lot :)
