Does anyone have experience of polyhydramnios?

I have just been diagnosed with polyhydramnios - too much amniotic fluid.

I'm 28 weeks. A week ago I was measuring 31 weeks, today I am measuring 36 weeks.

If I continue to increase in fluid at the same pace I will need to have some fluid drained off.

According to the scan the baby is okay, I am being tested for diabetes but the consultant said that they will probably not find the cause of it.

I just wondered if anyone had experienced this, and whether they needed to have fluid drained?

Many thanks.

Yes I had severe polyhydramnios with 2 of my 3 pregnancies, The last time was the most severe, I was tested for gestational diabetes and is wasn't that. Also had a scan to measure the fluid volume twice. My consultant did not want to drain any off- he warned me I could go into labour anytime when I was 32 weeks pregnant, as I was measuring full term. I held in there and my waters broke at 36 weeks, and my little boy was born weighing 6lbs 14oz. He was fine and needed no extra care- I took him home the next day. He is now 4 months and thriving if thats any reassurance!
I developed it at 30 weeks, but it seemed to slow down after a while - I hope happens for you!!
Its very uncomfortable being so big- I was sick of the comments "is it triplets" "you must be due any time" and then having to explain all about polyhydramnios etc
If you need to talk about it more feel free to CAT me

Yes, I had it with my last pregnancy and was diagnosed at around 30weeks I think. I was also tested for diabetes but it wasn't. I was hospitalised at 36 weeks as I think there was a risk of the umbilical cord prolapsing if my waters broke. At this point I measured 47 weeks with a big ! in my notes. My dd was also an unstable lie. It was uncomfortable but consultant decided not to drain any fluid as may start labour early. My dd was delivered by c-section at 39 weeks weighing 9lb 4oz and they drained approx 10 pints of fluid during the op. Dd was fine and now loves water!!

Good luck with everything.

Thank you very much for the responses here.

I'm now 30 weeks and measuring full term. But the good news is that in the last week I've only expanded 3cm, instead of 5cm the week before so hopefully my fluid increase is slowing.

Sparkle, I have been told the same as you were. That the baby is in an unstable lie and because of the threat to the placenta I'll probably be hospitalised at about 36 weeks if the baby hasn't arrived by then.

Vicky, yes I'm already getting comments from people who think I'm due. I'm considering lying about my due date when complete strangers ask me how long I have got!

Thank you once again as hearing of other people's experiences does really help.

Also, I meant to ask, were you advised to take it easy?

I haven't been given any real advice whether or not I should be resting up. Measuring full term does of course mean I'm getting out of breath and feeling tired etc. but I'm not sure if I should be attempting to carry on as normal or whether I could cause my membranes to rupture by keeping myself busy?
