When did you take out your implant?

I posted this on 'conception' but seeing as you ladies have obviously done this successfully (!) I@ll put it here too

----

Getting married to fiance mid July.

We are going on honeymoon for the last 2 weeks of July and want to start conceiving either on honeymoon, or as soon as we get back (depends if I can face a sober honeymoon with the old trout as to if we try on honeymoon or later!)

I have the implant, have had it in for a year, no periods at all.

I read that you should take folic acid for 3 months before starting trying...

What if it takes a year to conceive? Can I take folic acid all that time without overdosing!

Big question is when to get out the implant? Now? Later? Still got some condoms so contraception would be OK...we'd use them if we had to. Obviously the dream situation is to be on the implant. No periods, no condom usage. But if my body needs a few months to get back to normal I'd rather know now IYSWIM

I know everyone is different etc etc but any advice at all?

I had the implant removed in august and fell pregnant in September so was very quick. 4th child and fell pregnant very quickly this time.

I had my implant out in early August, and conceived in early October (probably the second normal cycle after removing it, and the first cycle where we made a point of being especially active at the right time). Obviously everyone's different, but the impression I've had from reading other websites, etc, is that there isn't much evidence for a delay in returning to normal.

I also don't think there's a problem taking folic acid for a year, though!

Thank you, and thanks for info about folic acid

I took mine out in early May, had 1 period in June and in July I got a BFP. Fertility returned to normal pretty quickly and I was glad I had one normal cycle as it gave me dates to work from as the implant had meant I hadn't had a period in over a year before removing it.

And I'm pretty sure you can't OD on folic acid. When I went to have my implant out the doctor asked me why I was having it removed and when I told her it was because I was ttc she told me I should start taking folic acid immediately.

bilblio · 21/03/2011 19:19

I had mine out in November. Unlike you I had ridiculously irregular and long periods with the implant, like 3 weeks on, 1 week off. December had a normal period again, 3 days on 25 off, Heaven! Another normal period in Jan, no period in Feb because I was pregnant. :)
So I'd say it takes no time at all for your cycle to get back to normal. In fact that's what my GP told me. I'd told her I wanted a few months to make sure my body was back to normal before trying again and she warned me to take other precautions as the implant stopped working as soon as it was removed.

I had mine out when I was 9 weeks pregnant Shock

Bilblio, slightly off-topic but at first the implant did that to my cycle so I went to the doctor to have it removed because it was driving me mad and he told me that instead of having it removed I could go on the pill too which would regulate my period but I wouldn't have to worry about taking it every day. I took it for 1 month and it stopped my periods completely. RESULT! :) After that I was on the implant only with no periods - so even if it wasn't great for you first time around it might be an option in future with this extra bit of info.

Perpetuallypregnant, oh dear... I have never heard of it failing before. Do you know why it did? I heard that it can if fitted wrong or if you have had it longer than advised but never actually heard of it failing.

bilblio · 21/03/2011 23:18

Oh thanks for that Catherine. I ruled it out for next time as I got so sick of the periods. I was thinking I'd have to go with a coil next time which I really don't like the idea of but the pill isn't an option as I can't remember to take my hayfever medicine when I'm sneezing my head off and my eyes are streaming.... which reminds me, haven't taken my folic acid yet today Blush
I am officially rubbish with tablets.

Once you have the implant taken out you may actually be more fertile than usual, many women have found this out after getting pregnant. Check out some forums for other womens stories about it. Just take it out a week or so before you go IMO, the docs say that you should return to normal fertility straight away anyway so should be fine.

Hi I had my implant taken out on the 23 rd December 2010 and I still havent managed to fall pregnant. Its started to get me down and trying to put it to the back of my head is hard because once you forget about it there is always something their to remind me : / or if their is problems with either of us.

G1nger · 22/03/2011 10:57

I was on the pill for ten years, and it took 6 months before my cycles settled down. Although this is a lot longer than you've been using the implant, it can't hurt to assume a post-implant settling down phase and just go with condoms in the meantime (like we did).

Justtrying · 22/03/2011 12:56

Had the implant for 2 years, with much break through bleeding. Had it removed early july, one normal period after 4 weeks to the day then started TTC, BFP early sept, DC due in may. I was amazed how quick it happened. Took folic acid from april. Had intented to give body longer to settle down but we dont like condoms and neither of us getting any younger so started TTC expecting it to take 6 months or more, but delighted DC will be with us in 7 weeks.

pipoca · 22/03/2011 14:27

you can-t OD on folic acid, some doctors even recommend all women of child bearing age take it in case they get accidentally pregnant. I'd start the FO now if I were you.
No advice on the implant i'm afraid.

ThistleDoNicely · 22/03/2011 15:19

Start the folic acid now - you can't OD as your body just passes what you don't need.

I'd suggest getting the implant out two or three weeks before the wedding as it can leave a bit of a bruise and I'm guessing you'd probably rather not have that on the big day, or leave it until after the wedding.

I had implant out in July, normal period in August and conceived straight away - due May 31! One of the reasons I chose to have the implant was because as soon as it is out your fertility is back to normal, so there is no time for your body to have to recover (think with the pill it is like three months or something, but I know a few people who have conceived right away after coming off it so guess it depends on the person).

Congratulations on your wedding and plans to start a family! :)

G1nger · 22/03/2011 15:32

Re your folic acid question, one of the things my midwife asked me at my first appointment was how long I'd been taking it before conceiving. I've no idea why it mattered to her, but it did. Start taking it now, I guess?

DaisyFields · 22/03/2011 15:37

Congrats on wedding plans and TTC. I had my implant out mid-august and baby is due in 10 weeks - pretty quick (and completely unplanned) for me, I wondered if fertility is heightened after having it removed as margin for a mistake was so so small and yet it managed to happen!
