the baby starves.

seriously - what do you think happens?

geordieminx · 20/03/2011 20:53

Er you buy cartons to take with you?

pooka · 20/03/2011 20:54

You take your own formula in with you. Maybe buy some of the cartons (actually I think they're recommended for newborns anyway, because they are sterile unlike powdered milk, and you don't have to worry about ensuring feed made up with water not less than 70 degrees).

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/03/2011 20:56

You can buy packs of the Sma sterile bottles in Boots apparently. It was discussed in my ante natal class (that was over a year ago though)

NotaMopsa · 20/03/2011 20:56

always thought those tiny bottles a big waste of nhs funds apart from in scbu

clouiseg · 20/03/2011 20:57

The hospital I worked at had adopted a new policy surrounding formula feeding in that you would have to take your own supplies in and prepare the feeds yourself. Lots of reasons behind the changes but thats what you'll need to do. Can't speak for your hospital but ours provides all the sterilising equipment etc needed and you do the rest. HTH.

Take your own. My hospital doesn't provide formula either and state this on their website:

There are so many different formula milks available that we ask you to bring in to hospital with you, the one you prefer to use. As there is no facility for making up powdered feeds, please bring in a supply of ready made cartons to use during your stay.
A baby only has a small tummy so one carton will most likely do at least 3 feeds and can be stored in the fridge in the feeding room, labeled with your name, time and date opened. The staff will show you all this when you are on the ward. We will supply bottles and teats for you to use during your stay.

This is for the Royal Surrey Hospital.

Hopefully it means you will get help and support to bf if you want, so you dont come out feeling that your milk 'doesn't work' or you are shown the facilities to prepare the formula you brought in with you

I expect for genuine emergencies there is a smal supply of formula

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/03/2011 20:58

You take your own. Cartons will be easier. Check if they have facilities to sterilse bottles otherwise you'll need to take something to do that too.

What do you mean your milk doesn't work btw?

Valiant1 · 20/03/2011 20:59

Thanks pooka can you still buy the steralised bottles? sorry youngest ds is 5 bit out of the loop sorry.

you don't have breastmilk for the first 3 days or so, you have colostrom - no way you can pump it out

but if you want to formula feed just take a carton in with you

Valiant1 · 20/03/2011 21:04
