Metformin during pregnancy

Hi I am wondering if anyone has taken Metformin during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy i am not pregnant yet (fingers crossed for the future) and my dr said if i go on metformin to conceive and get pregnant i should stay on it for 8 weeks as it prevents miscarriage (I had a mis last time)

Has anyone done this?
I am worried about the effects of metformin on a baby during pregnancy, I just want a healthy perfect baby.

I was told by my consultant to take it until 14 weeks so I did, had taken it for 8 years prior to that. I am now 30 weeks today and all is well.x

Hi. Just briefly as it's getting late! I took Metformin during pregnancy (and just before) as I have PCOs (amongst other problems) and had to have IVF to have my DD. I took it for whole of pregnancy (plus vitamins, "baby" aspirin & steroids - all consultant recommended/prescribed).

DD was delivered by emergency c-section at 35 weeks but that was due to her heart rate dropping (I'd also been closely monitored due to developing pre-eclampsia). The following morning it was discovered she had a low blood sugar level and that, coupled with her not feeding well (lazy-itis I think!!) resulted in her being admitted to the neo natal unit and tube-fed. The docs felt it was more than likely as a result of the Metformin (given that it's generally a diabetes medication) and she wasn't then helping herself by not taking milk (little monkey Smile ). HOWEVER, as I said, I took Metformin for whole pregnancy.

DD is now 3yo and is absolutely fine Smile

Yes, took it up to 12 weeks or so with DD, she is fine, and have done the same with this pg. Good luck with your baby making!

I have no personal experience of it, but I know of plenty of women who have, and it's generally considered that the benefits outweigh the risks.
