Unisex Newborn Clothes...

Ok, I'm 31 weeks and have been going through all the bits and bobs we have been given & bought clothes wise and wanted some advice...

We have a lot of cute short sleeved bodysuit/vest thingies (unisex as we don't know what we're having) and I realsied today that although the baby is due in May it is still going to need trousers / leggings - I have been unable to find anything apart from the red stripey ones in the mothercare mix & match range!
I may be a bit a lot clueless but can anyone help with suggestions on what to dress a newborn in (obv once its out we can get some gender specific clothes!) but I feel a bit underprepared and any general advice on what to dress them in would be great!

Thanks

have you got any sleepsuits? you can use them in daytime or nighttime for newborns, they tend to come in packs of 3 will be neutral ones in mothercare, m&s, next, debenhams.. everywhere basically
also you can get ones that are a bit more outfittish sold seperately. or you should be able to find neutral colour baby trousers eg cream colour or that kind of thing? i've seen in boots but sure lots of places would have some. you can get trousers with feet on too if you want that, have seen in asda before

NotAnotherNewNappy · 18/03/2011 17:03

All you need are lots of babygros and the vests you already have. Plus hat, scratch mits and a maybe a cardigan. As you say, you can shop for gender specific stuff once he/she is here (pref online so you don't have to drag your newborn round shops!).

I also found these. It's really hard to get unisex stuff these days.

Misty9 · 18/03/2011 17:05

I've been advised that newborns basically live in babygros (sleepsuits/onesies) as they spend so much time asleep!

My brother and his wife said that trying to get their baby in anything like separates was pointless until he was a bit older...

We're not finding out either :) which people seem to find odd - have you had this reaction? Still only nearly 16wks, but OH really doesn't want to know.
Congrats! Nearly there!

DD2 was born last may and it was really hot so she spent most of the day in just a vest, and then a babygro (sleepsuit) at night. If you have plenty of vests and babygros then they can wear one or the other if its warm and if its a bit cooler they can wear them both together.

nicolamumof3 · 18/03/2011 17:33

definitely just sleepsuits will be fine for early weeks so wouldn't worry about anything else at all. clothes will be given to you and can be bought in days either online or instore so i wouldn't worry.

PrincessScrumpy · 18/03/2011 17:38

I love babies in babygros. DD didn't wear anything else for at least 3 months - could even comprehend how you get tights on a newborn, mine was not easy to dress! Occasionally I put a soft pinafore style dress over the babygro but that was it.

Just get a few things - people will probably get you loads when baby is born and they no the sex.

PrincessScrumpy · 18/03/2011 17:40

Next had some lovely ones when dd was born (3-years ago).

Biggem · 20/03/2011 19:59

Misty9 - yep, everyone is v miffed that we didn't find out, my OH wanted to know but I didn't - I like suprises Wink

Thanks for all the advice tho, I thought I would be in the wrong for thinking it was ok for the little bean to live in babygrows & lil vest so am v happy to here thats the norm for the 1st few months!

I have been trying to get some unisex babygros for in hospital and finding it a real struggle-most places seem to do only blue and pink and I find the yellow unisex look girly to me and unisex green seem boyish to me!!
Was definately easier with my last 2-white baby gros with little grey polka dot trim or with little brown teddies-but this time its really difficult.
Maybe they sell less as more people find out the sex now?

breatheslowly · 20/03/2011 21:59

We found "baby bundlers" really useful at night. They are like night dresses with elastic at the bottom. I would recommend getting things with poppers up the front so that you don't have to pull things over your baby's head. Also consider what size you want - our DD didn't fit newborn babygrows as her legs were too long (she was born 2 weeks late) and her 0-3 month clothes didn't last long either. We have found footless rompers really good for her.

nicolamumof3 · 21/03/2011 11:59

i think you are right magenta think alot of people do find out now.

i like them in plain white for first few days i must admit. white co. do some nice very neutral ones but ££ not sure what gap like? they usually do white too?

thefurryone · 21/03/2011 12:22

magenta both M&S and John Lewis have a good range of plain white sleepsuits and vests, and M&S definitely have some that have neutral patterns on them. Both are quite reasonably priced.

shoofly · 21/03/2011 17:04

Tesco have lovely white with grey, and cream and beige baby gros and vests, as do Next and M&S. sometimes the sizes on display in Tesco have been the bigger ones, but very helpful girl got me some newborn and 0-3 ones from the store. Next had nice ones too and no problems with getting the sizes. HTH

I had a few little outfits for my DS but he mainly lived in vests and babygros for the first couple of months! they are so much easier!

Pootletrinket · 26/03/2011 08:46

DD lived in sleepsuits and vests until 3 months and it was a) easy and b) she looked so cute - all were white or cream!!

littlemissw · 26/03/2011 20:50

Sleepsuits are definitely the way to go. My DC's did not like anything tight around their waists & lived in sleepsuits & rompers until around 9 months. I've always found Babyies R Us great for unisex sleepsuits, such as these

Magen · 27/03/2011 12:53

I love the gowns with elastic at the bottom. Very convenient for middle of the night nappy changes. But pajamas of any kind are always a safe bet for a newborn. Actual outfits are a just a pain in the neck. Carter's is having a 50% off sale through today and if you spend $50 or more you can use the code NEWBORN and get an additional 20% off.

2and1ontheway · 27/03/2011 13:28

I agree like everyone else on babygrows/ sleepsuits but not that newborns sleep all the time as somebody else said - my first had not read the book and was awake most of the day right from day 1 (and quite a lot of the night) ... but I am just making trouble... :) Sleepsuits are still the way to go even if baby doesn't sleep all the time - the little outfits are just sold for childless friends to buy for cute presents, babies are happier if they are comfortable and sleepsuits/ rompers / babygrows or whatever they may be labelled as are best for that.

ninipops · 27/03/2011 19:20

Hell I'd wear sleepsuits non-stop if I could get a way with it - so comfy! I have a fleece one that I wore constantly when pg with DD but she was born in winter. Don't think it will last this time as DS is due in July but its working at the mo! But back to the actual topic - just what everyone else said vest sleepsuits and maybe some cardigans for the first 3/4 months and actually I used a sleepsuit as my emergency change of clothes til DD was about 9 months - much easier than faffing about in a changing bag searching for all the bits of an outfit.

BikeRunSki · 27/03/2011 19:32

Stick with what you've got and send Granny to Mothercare when baby is born!
DS was born at 6.30am on a Sunday, Granny was at Mothercare that afternoon. She couldn't wait.

EdgarAleNPie · 27/03/2011 19:42

Mothercare currently doing some very cute unisex sleepsuits with duckys on. - you need about 10 in first size (you may get load as presents)

I think mothercare are doing rainbow & grey farm animals ones too.

Tescos, Asda etc usually have similar.

your baby may grow out of first size very quickly, though they usually get through loads in one day (20 nappy changes a day - just try to keep the clothes clean..)

kathpeak · 27/03/2011 21:30

Same as everyone else, babygro's are the business. For my daughter I also bought a few cute girlie vests in a size 6 years and put them over the baby gro like a dress if we were going out. For my nephew I made some little waistcoats out of teeshirt fabric to go over the babygro. It just dressed them up a bit without much hassle or too much extra washing.
