I've had a tooth out one side monday - all is fine, bit odd but fine, other side thou has now got an infection in it.

i'm in severe pain (ear aches & half way down neck as well), paracetamol isn't touching it at all, currently having 2 every 4 hours, started amoxicillian this afternoon had 1 dose. also having 2 neurofen in the 2 hours between the paracetamol.

I don't like taking the later but it's the only thing to touch it. my doctor wouldn't help, only to say neurofen is safest if taken i the second tri but preferably not. my dentist gave me the amoxicillian.

I'm 17+2. How much damage would/could i be doing, what else can I do - currently have a hot water bottle on it, salt baths & cleaning after eating soft things. Have so far (since monday) been surviving on yoghurt's, mash potato wotsits or porridge, so again am worried baby won't be getting all the good stuff it needs.

We have our 20 week scan on the 7th, m/w on tues just gone showed a v strong healthy heart beat. Just after some sleep & reassurance, preferably not flaming as I know I prob shouldn't be taking any pain killers at all. :(

ps' he's also just reaffirmed my fear of dentists he wasn't very slow/patient with me or waited to the anesetic was fully working. Still it's gone now, just hope it works.

Not quite sure what you mean by "4 anesetics & an absess later", an abscess is what it sounds like, no different on a tooth than anywhere else in your body. If the tooth is gone (is it?) the abscess will have drained and the pain will go.

This is why prevention is better than cure etc, I always say to my patients that it's better to do the treatment on our terms than wait for you to call someone out on Xmas day because you're in pain. Do you have a regular dentist? The majority of dental problems can be headed off a long time before they turn into abscesses but granted not all of them. It's far beter to see someone you are used to and trust than the first dentist who will see you because you're in pain.

This is from a website I use for interactions at work, I'm not an obstetrician or paediatrician so I can't tell you about ibuprofen and pregnancy I'm afraid:

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy unless considered essential by your doctor. This is particularly important in the first and third trimesters. If taken in the third trimester it may delay labour, increase the length of labour and cause complications in the newborn baby. Some evidence suggests that NSAIDs should also be avoided by women attempting to conceive, as they may temporarily reduce female fertility during treatment and may also increase the risk of miscarriage or malformations. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
This medicine may pass into breast milk, but in such small quantities that it is unlikely to harm the baby. However, as with all medicines, seek medical advice from your doctor before taking this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

grumps - he used one on my outter gum, inner gum then did the same again & said I couldn't have any more after that. yes he toook it out, I was in and out in 10 mins - gettinng a tooth out under those circ's is deffo NOT an experience I shall be repeating soon!

I do have a reg one yes, who is lovely, really nice, and to be fair know's my fears so is a lot gentler & I do trut him (helps he's really hot as well lol) he took one out monday but said the one I had out today didn't look as bad - to be fair when I saw him thursday he thought it was an infection. (it was fine monday - this has been caused by eating on it whilst it was cracked). This all happened originally over xmas, we were hoping to leave them both whilst I was pg and have them taken out after the baby was born. I guess the chap today for his part did the best he could do and also I appreciate that his time was more limited, just didn't feel like he waited fully for the local to work enough.

am feeling a bit bruised from it all on that side but touch wood it's a dull ache so I can cope with that and paracetamol. fwiw my doctor thursday said it would be ok to take the neurofen but then yesterday's doctor said not to. hopefully thou I won't be having it again - at least don't intend to.

Oh also the nurse shook her head when I mentioned the hot water bottle - am assuming the icing another poster mentioned is better? shall call my reg dentist on monday to advise of the update & see if he needs to see me sooner than the 7th as planned to have it out then.

but for now i'm stocked up on baby jars mash, rice puddings and complan lol.

Oh God bless you, you've been through the mill!!!!!!

Hot water bottles tend to draw infection towards them so if you put it on the outside of your face, (rarely) it can cause a drain (like a spot but chronic) to form on your cheek which the infetion drains out of. I am confident that if you were my sister I would advise you that having the tooth out is the best option but unfortunately the planets have conspired against you and you've had to have it done by an unhot dentist Sad

Our vet is G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S and I sooooo wish he was my Dr and not the Dog's because I am secretly in love although DH is clearly the best man in the world, the vet is lush. Lush Blush Grin Confused

haha quite dp is the best but this dentist - well, it's almost worth the pain for his chair side mannor lol.

sorry one very final question, i've gor 4 days of tablets left, assuming I do salt baths clean properly after each meal 7 finish the course will the infection/abcess clear of it's own accord - I sometimes get a bit of an odd taste in my mouth but thought it was the infection coming out?

yes the chap today was quick, but likwise it really had to be done so i'm happier - now lets hope for sleep. :)

Basically, the bad tooth is like a splinter. Once you've got the bugler out, the source has gone. The infection amy take a bit of clearing but with the regime you've described above, the abscess should clear. I would be surprised (read shocked and unusual) if it didn't go away within 3 days and make you feel loads better.

Excellent, just what I wanted to hear. Thanks for your advice today. :) Roll on the next childless weekend with DP so we can have a nice dinner out (about 2.5 weeks time lol)

when i had my very nasty tooth out, it took 2 days for the pain to go completely so you will be fine! just be very happy it is GONE. i am relieved for you....

also, if you live in London (i should have given this info earlier) then i would recommend this dentist - she was the fourth one i visited who had the courage to remove my tooth while it was infected (after i had had my baby) - she is amazing!!!!

www.fulhamdentalcare.co.uk/TT_DentalSurgeons.htm it is Dr Celehte - excellent!!!!

Again grumpy my regular dentist was so bad - she had promised to remove it once i had had my baby and when i went back to her, she said oh no i can't do it for you so it's not that people don't have regular dentists!!!!!

davidtennantsmistress · 21/03/2011 08:29

I am oinkoink. god 2 days, the bruising today finally feels like it's gone down and i've had no painkillers since yesterday tea, still not eating properly but I can deal with that for baby's sake, now just worried if any damage has been done I took the neurofen for 2 full days but 2 more than I should have done in that period. Paracetomal I had for 3 days and 4 more than I should have done. Co codimal has been 2 full days at the right dose with nothing since. so fingers crossed hoping & praying.

better ring the dentist today though incase he wants to see me for another course of antibotics. but hey on the plus side my main reasons for going to the dentists are now gone so I don't need to go back hahaha. (only joking grumps)

thanks for all your advice all of you.
