I keep reading mixed reviews on this, can we eat it or not? When I had my DS 9 years ago it was a definite no but so were peanuts and philadelphia, and along with those I have since read its ok to eat honey, but then some places say no..so I'm confused.

I wanted it to put in a lemon drink for my lovely sore throat that OH has kindly given me along with his cold :(

Honey is fine for us, just not for babies

CBear6 · 17/03/2011 11:43

Babies under 12mo I mean, not unborn ones.

Never heard this one before, can't imagine what would be wrong with honey?!

The reason that babies can't have honey is that it may contain tiny amounts of the toxin that causes botulism. Not enough to make an adult, but it could affect a tiny baby.
By the way, once they are over 12 months, local honey is thought to be an excellent way of protecting against hayfever. And it's lovely and you'll be supporting you local bees..and we all need bees!

not for under 12mth babies as their stomachs arent developed enough for potential toxins in the honey but honey is fine for us...

Agree with others, fine for you not for your baby once it arrives.

There is some useful information on the nct website about which foods to avoid.

Ah thanks for that :) I think at one time it was out for mums to be as well because of possible salmonella, but they obviously changed their mind on that as well :)

There was a scare years ago about unpasteurised honey being unsafe in pg. However this was dismissed pretty quickly because the pasteurisation process for honey is not about sterilisation, its about making the honey clear. It has no health consequences whatsoever...but you know what happens when a newspaper decides to run a scare story!

Go for it!
