baby is already being predicted to be 5lbs Shock

Am I going to end up with a 12lb-er?

The upside is I suppose is that if baby comes early it will be a good weight.

Anybody else being predicted a big baby?

My doctor (ob/gyn, who did the scans) told me my son would be about 5kg (about 11 lb), this was based on scans at 29 and about 33 weeks and the fact my first child was 4.1 kg (9lbs 1) and the size of my bump! As I had had a complicated emergency section with my first baby and my second was "so big" he recommended a planned section at 39 weeks - which I had and my son was just over 3.8 kg - about 8lb 6! So he was miles out!

You might be having a huge baby of course, and it is definitely worth the health professionals keeping an eye on as there can be some risks birthing a larger baby (although I have heard mums say they birthed their larger babies more easily than smaller - but don't know from experience as I had sections) but equally the scan might be misleading! They are a guide but not especially accurate where predicting birth weight is concerned!

Good luck - I find bigger babies very confidence inspiring anyway, teeny ones can seem a bit intimidatingly fragile!

I think weight estimations are notoriously inaccurate to be honest and wouldnt worry too much about them. I was told I was having at the very least a 10 pounder with dd (number 1). She was 11 days "late" and weighed 8lbs 9ounces. Hmm

Actually a cousin of DH's recently had a little boy. Shes a young girl and was told by consultant that they may have to plan a c-section early because the baby was so huge. He was 5 days overdue in the end and weighed 6lbs 13.

You could of course have a big baby but honestly, I would pay too much attention.

I wouldn'y worry too much tbh. My DD was predicted to be over 10lb from the scan - she was actually 6lb 10oz. Bit of a difference...

My bump is measuring a little 'big' apparently. Midwife says could be indication of big baby. I'm ignoring them on the basis, as other MN'ers are pointing out, it's virtually impossible to tell. Previous baby was 3.4kg which is right on average I believe. Plus I was born with so called 'child-bearing' hips Grin

I have been measuring very large for dates throughout my pregnancy, was referred twice for growth scans..Like you, my baby was predicted 5lbs at 32 weeks..Consultant was happy that I just seem to be carrying a large baby, she also said I could be induced a little early if I liked, but this was something she was against, as induction often leads to further complications.

Like other posters have said, a big baby doesn't necessarily mean a hard labour. Most docs nowadays don't tend to induce/interfere with babies just because they are predicted larger.

i was told 4 weeks ago at a private 4d scan that my baby was already weighing 2lb12oz and would be born at over 9lb.........my babies have actually got smaller (this is 3rd baby, 1st 8lb4, 2nd 7lb4 )
I think you have to take it with a pinch of salt.
My sister had her baby in November and all the way through was told she was HUGE and baby would be huge, it was her fifth child and he was born 4 days early at 6lb4oz.....the smallest of her 5!

My bump has been measuring fine all the way through pg, but at 32wk scan I was told I was carrying lots of extra fluid and baby was measuring 3 weeks ahead. I then got sent for a diabetes test to check that wasn't causing it. Had another scan at 34wks and baby is now only measuring 2 weeks ahead, & they aren't worried any more.

So, things can change along the way & like the others say, it's nobad thing to have a baby that's on the big side (I've been told they come out easier too) DD was 2.33kg (5lb 2oz) when she arrived 6 weeks early, so we were all pleased she was a little on the chunky side! Grin
