Sickness - loss weight, should I worry?

I am 11+4 weeks and since last tuesday I find it extremely hard to keep any food/drink,

All I have had for the past few days is Half a small glass of water with squash in the morning (which I force myself to have in order to take the vitamins),

and maybe a small slice of bread with soft cheese on it.

If I take anything else I know I won't keep it as I am already struggling to keep this little amount.

As a result I am extremely tired at the moment.

I wasn't too worried until I stepped on the scale and realised that since my first midwife appointment (3 and a half week ago) I have lost 5kg (it was the same scale used and weight myself around the same time).

I am not skinny and I know I am a bit overweight so I didn't worry too much but speaking to my mum tonight, she got me worried, and is urging me to see the dr asap.

So basically my question is, would you be worried and see a doctor?

Hi babloogirl,

I had hyperemisis in my last pregnancy and was admitted to hospital. I learned that weight loss is not in itself worrying, but being dehydrated IS dangerous. It sounds like you have had very little liquids, so I would definitely get in contact with your GP ASAP. If you drink liquids are you vomiting them back up? or are you avoiding drinking because it makes you feel too sick? Either way, you must try and get some more fluids in. Maybe if you phoned NHS direct they could advise you whats the best thing to do/what to watch out for?

Hope you feel better soon, its such a horrible thing to go through.

Thank you for your answer MummyAbroad

I have tried to drink more but then I vomit it all, I really try but it isn't working!

I could feel sick in the past weeks but the past 4/5 days have just gone worst!

I agree with mummyabroad. Weight loss isn't a problem or even lack of nutrients, your baby will take what it needs from you and leave you with a deficiency if it needs to, they are very efficient parasites.

BUT, dehydration is a problem so I would call your midwife and get an urgent appointment.

Try sipping drinks. Some people find it easier through a straw and some people find fizzy drinks better than still. Some liquid is better than none but if your urine is dark in colour then you need to be assessed (take a urine sample with you).

I'd go and see the midwife or doctor so they can check you're not too dehydrated.

I've had hyperemesis before. It seemed a bit easier to drink lucozade than a lot of other things, you could give that a try. A lot of other people get on well with flat coke and ice lollies so you could give those a go too?

marylou242 · 14/03/2011 20:12

Also meant to say, you could try having just a sip of something every 5-10 minutes. Sometimes if it's just a small amount, your stomach can take it better.

I lost weight in first trimester as i felt so sick. The midwife just said that the baby would take whatever it needed so not to worry too much (just that it would make me feel rubbish as I'd have no nutrients left for myself) Obviously check it with your doc if you're worried, but don't panic Smile

In terms of drinking, I found I couldn't drink on its own, but if I ate a cracker or something first then I could drink without feeling too ill. Good luck.

Baloogirl sorry to hear you're suffering and agree about urgent GP appt to address possible dehydration.
Also, hop over to the HG Support thread here for some advice

babloogirl that does sound like worryingly little liquid

NHS choices websites says this:

"Contact your GP or midwife immediately if you:
have very dark-coloured urine or do not pass urine for more than eight hours
have abdominal (tummy) pain
have a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above
feel severely weak, dizzy or faint when standing up
vomit blood
have a racing heart rate
have repeated episodes of vomiting
are unable to keep food or fluids down for 24 hours
Alternatively, call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 to speak to a medical adviser."

Coconut water is a very good natural rehydration drink - not sure how easy it is to get in the UK though. It tastes just about bland enough to get down too.

Can you call your midwife? Maybe they can come and see you and asses you? Take care.

babloogirl · 15/03/2011 08:33

Thank you all, I called NHS direct last night, and I am still waiting for a call back...

I have spoken to the surgery and they have booked me in for an appointment at 9.40 this morning, I will report back,

dont forget to take a urine sample....

you are me a few weeks ago.... i was very very sick too and lost a stone on 3 weeks. I went to dr 3 days in a row, as each time i wasnt ill enough to go to hospital... but by the 3rd day, when i had kept down NOTHING AT ALL for 72 hours (not even ice!) i was admitted to hospital,

Hopefully they will just prescribe anti-sickness, they did for me, but then i always vomited them straight back so didnt work.

If you get them it is important to keep them down for an hour (if you can, sometimes you just cant)

I found i can normally manage if i lie on my bed in the dark, eyes closed COMPLETELY still and only think about slow breathing, it helps, and then after the hour you can vomit withoit looseing the medicine from tablet.

You have my sympathies as its horrible feeling so poory.
Acupuncure has also helped me a little and i get needle plasters on my wrists which i keep in for 5 days.

MummyAbroad · 16/03/2011 23:51

how did you get on babloogirl?

notenoughlicorice · 22/03/2011 14:16

I hope you got better. I lost weight in the first trimester, and had ketosis. I was scared of HG and being put on a drip.
I had to just eat ice for a while, then could gradually have small sips of water.
Cocunut juice worked for me more, and still does. Maybe you can get some from a south east asian grocery store (Thai or Hong Kong style grocer, but the trick is finding a store you can handle the smell of - maybe get someone else to go look for it). The thai stuff is the easiest to digest and the best tasting.

I am 21 weeks now and still get sick but can usually keep one meal in a day (although small) at least, and have even had a few ok days.

My doctor said not to worry about weight too much. I was prescribed vitamins to conteract the loss of nutrients. As long as some of them were absorbed it was better than none.

In the end I was given an antihistamine drug that meant I would stop being sick and sleep, so would take the vitamins with a drink before this and knock myself out to absorb them.

Good luck.
