Congenital Hip Dysplasia and SPD

I had congenital hip dysplasia when I was born and had to be in a Von Rosen splint for the first three months after birth. I'm now 31 weeks pregnant with my first baby and have been experiencing symptoms of SPD.

I was just wondering if there was any connection with the two. I'm due to see a physiotherapist next week regarding the suspected SPD and will ask more there as well, but was just wondering whether anyone here had been in the same position..

I had the same condition but no SPD with DS, I don't think the two are necessarily related. When I gave the midwife my medical history at my booking in both last time and this time it was never mentioned as an increased risk and my GP has never mentioned anything either when discussing medical history.

I don't know if the two are related. I've had SPD before and it's starting in this pg. I know that it is related to joint hypermobility and I do have that. I don't know if JH and hip dysplasia are related though. I guess the best person to ask would be the physio Smile

I had the same as you, but only got SPD with DC2. I did experience mild hip pain with DC1, but only towards the end, and nothing like I had with DC2. I was on crutches by 19 weeks and housebound for the last month :(

If you haven't already, get yourself reffered for physio. They can't do much but I found the support belt made a huge difference and the crutches were a godsend!

I have hypermobility too, my GP said it's common in people with hip dysplasia.

Thanks for your replies!

Yeah I'll definitely ask the physio next week at my appointment. I haven't asked anyone until now, because I had actually completely forgot about having had the condition until my mum pointed it out, when talking to her about my possible SPD. I'll need to make sure I'll also mention it to my MW at my next appointment just in case.. To be honest, I always just assumed the hip dysplasia had been corrected in my childhood and that I no longer had any issues with my pelvic structure, because it's never really come up. But then again, now that a few of you mentioned it, I realise I have hypermobility, as I have double jointed elbows etc. Actually I feel quite daft now, how could I have never connected the two before Blush!

Oh gosh I hope I won't be housebound in a few weeks, that sounds awful! I hope I get the at least the support belt though; the mothercare one is completely useless and I really wish I could walk a bit now that the weather is staring to get warmer!
