I'm in UK but my SIL emigrated end of June & phoned this morning to say she's 8 weeks pg. I am delighted for her, although sad, that they are so far away at such an exciting time. I'm hoping if I send her a Mumsnet link any ladies who are in Oz could give her help & advice re medical system, mat leave all these type of things that you don't know when it's your first.
BIL has lots of family there & she'll get loads of advice & support I know, but sometimes it's nice to get in touch with people going through the same things at the same time especially when she's in a new country. I know from past experience that loads of the Aussie ladies on the products thread are very helpful so I'm hoping there's some in here too. TIA

Where is she based in Aus? I have a babe who is almost one... we moved from the Uk when I was pregnant with dd2.

Don't know anything about maternity leave as I was not working when we moved here with dd1 and I was expecting dd2.

If you want to CAT me I can then give you my 'real' email address if she wants to contact me.

Get her onto Mumsnet - there are a cheery tribe of people living in AUs who regularly post here.

Me! I'm 13 weeks, CAT me and she can get in touch if you like. I had ds in the UK, so am finding my feet a bit with the way pre-natal care is done here, but would love to help.

Bouj - congratulations did not know....

Bouj · 24/10/2005 10:21

Thanks! Where was dd2 born?

eidsvold · 24/10/2005 12:28

Royal Woman's hopsital at bowen hills.. could choose between Royal, Redclifee or Caboolture. Choose the Royal as dh started work at the children's the day after dd2 was born - he was due to start the day she was born but as I had to have a caesar and that was the day they booked me in - he had the day off... also made it easier for friends and family to come and visit. Can't fault the care - brilliant midwives ( except for one and she was stressed out so don't blame her)

Excellent, thanks. Am quizzing everyone, though am probably going for the Mater. Had heard lots of good things about Royal Womens.

eidsvold · 25/10/2005 22:43

Which is closer?!? Have had a couple of friends give birth at the mater.... one had a fab experience and one had a not so good experience.

Would you be going private? We didn't as we did not have private health insurance and would not have qualified as we had only been in Aus for about 20 weeks when dd2 was born.

Bouj · 25/10/2005 23:40

Mater, definitely. Will be private, timed it so I could have private! I'm happy with my obstetrician, so guess that's the important bit. Good friend had her first there in June, and she was happy with it. I wanted the Sunnybank because they've done the rooms up and it looks lovely & posh! Are you having any more?

scully · 26/10/2005 12:47

I was born at the Royal Womens, but that was 35yrs ago, so I imagine things have changed slightly
So funny to be sitting at work in London, reading these familiar names from back in Brisvegas

eidsvold · 26/10/2005 13:16

scully - me too - being born there that is... it has been overhauled and all very flash and relatively new. Clean, well set out - fab hospital.

NOt sure - I would like one more perhaps - wonder if dh feels he has missed out not having a boy BUT I think dd1 will be his rough nut but two cheeky monkeys are enough for now and dh and I are getting old. We do not cope well with sleep deprivation.
