SPD? Is this it?

I'm 33 weeks and this last week have been getting a really sharp stabbing pain in my groin, well more in my hip/thigh joints. I thought SPV was more central in the pelvis, but this pain is aweful and getting worse every day.

It's not too bad in the morning, is bad when I get up from my chair during the day (I have a desk job) and def get's worse thoughtout the day, to the extent that the last couple of nights I'm in agony & hobbling around by the evening, trying to avoid moving. Last night it was dreadful but when I woke this morning I was relieved to feel very little pain - didn't last though as it's just got worse and worse througout the day. Took DD to the park & I enjoyed the stroll but I'm paying for it now.

I have a check up on Friday - but do you think this is SPD, or any idea what else it might be?

TIA

20 weeks

bish - I was brushed off too, the MW saying it was far too early to be having SPD/pelvis issues. Only referred me late then it was coming up to Christmas and labour so never did get any help!!
Don't put up with pain! Push them for extra support & a referral!

Also - I really made a big mistake by going to a yoga for pregnancy class, overstretched and could barely walk for weeks afterwards. Agony. Beware! Didn't bother second time around!! Think Pilates would have been really useful tho...

I am on my third PG with severe SPD. This time I have found a physio who specialises in it. Hallelujah.

  1. GPs generally do not understand this condition.
  2. Yoga, walking and swimming will make it worse until you have sufficiently strengthened the appropriate muscles.
  3. Do Sleep on your side with pillow between legs. Never sleep on front.
  4. Always keep knees apart. Never cross legs.
  5. Use exercise ball. Sit on it with knees apart and do gentle circular moves taking care to keep shoulders still and in same position throughout.
  6. Don't carry heavy bags.
  7. Sit don't stand.
SPD is awful, so don't put up with it. Good luck.

I've been sleeping flat again the last few nights and pelvis/hip pain has def decreased. I'm not walking much either Sad and that is helping too. Such a bummer though - I hate that I am so inactive & feeling like an old lady. Will try to get some swims in though pool close to work is £4.50 a swim!

I am also wearing this for this pregnancy:

the Serola Sacro-Iliac belt: www.appliedbiomechanics.co.uk

It has massively reduced the pain, although it takes a bit of getting used to.

My symptoms have got better over the last week. DOes this mean it is something else, not spd/pgp? It has gone from being a major problem, to the point where most evenings I could hardly walk, to being a minor thing, where I get aches and stiffness in the area if I've had a busy day.
I wonder if maybe it is sciatica, which is what everyone kept telling me. Or is it all the changes I have made. I find that if I stand a lot and forget to sit it starts to come back.
I don't know whether to cancel my physio appt which is in a couple of weeks.

StiffyByng · 20/03/2011 15:14

I wouldn't cancel your appointment. It's hard to get them
and if things get worse again you'll be stuck. Maybe think again in a week if you're still improving?

I have to rave about my chiropractor. The physio gave me a belt, which made some difference. The hospital doctor prescribed codeine, which gave me relief for the first time in weeks. But then I saw the chiropractor (just paid, rather than wait for a referral). Thorough examination, unlike anyone else, and two gentle maneouvres, and the next day I was a different woman. I haven't taken any painkillers since Friday. I can walk without limping. I still have some pain but it just doesn't compare. I'm going back for two more sessions with him this week. So I'd urge anyone to do the same. It sounds like the physio upthread-someone who really understands SPD.

I had been feeling very depressed as the GP said it would just get worse, but now I feel so much happier.

And I have worked from home since last Wednesday, and the rest has also helped a lot. Thank goodness for mat leave in 2 weeks!
