Exactly!

And apparently there are more surprise boys than girls because if a willy can't be seen, then the assumption has to be made that it's a girl. However, just because you can't see it easily on a scan, doesn't mean it's not there...

I was told this by DH's cousin who is a radiographer but did a bit of sonography in his training, was spot on with his prediction from our 20 week scan photos with DD though (but knew he wasn't allowed to tell us!)

lotti37 · 11/03/2011 12:34

yes 60% is not that high. when should a next scan be after a 20 weeks scan. over here you can pay and have one done whenever you want so maybe i will leave it 6 weeks and have another one done and say that I know its a boy can they just double check to be sure and see if i can see too.

Don't know when would be next best to check, in the UK you usually only get 12 week and 20 week scans, unless there's a medical reason.

F1ower · 11/03/2011 13:15

Hello, I'm new to this and joined today as I've just had a very confusing scan myself. At 20wks I was told I was having a boy and at 23 weeks have been told it's a grl. Think I might take a neutral coloured set of clothes to the hospital....

theborrower · 11/03/2011 13:40

F1ower - yep, good idea! Take white or yellow, and you can always go and get pink or blue (if that's what you want them to wear, that is) once you know what you've got :)

lucielooo · 11/03/2011 14:10

Oh wow.. 60% is really low and you're making me worry now! We did get a very good view of the scrotum and a little 'nub' at the 20 week scan. If you can see boy bits clearly, is there any way it can be a girl?? My god I'd get such a shock if it's not a boy!!!!!!!

MerryMarigold · 11/03/2011 17:05

60% may be the lowest certainty. I thought my sonographer said 80% one of the times I had scans. I had twins and had 4 scans from 14 weeks where I consistently asked to be told. Without telling the sonographers, they all agreed, one girl, one boy, and which was which. Mostly they didn't even warn me they may not be right...and one showed me all the bits in detail: "look at the labia, they're so clear" Hmm - that was at 14 weeks! I think if they were only 60% sure they would say they are not at all sure.

CaringForPod · 11/03/2011 20:31

We were told at 27 weeks that we're having a boy - you've got me worried now, people have been buying us boys' stuff! The sonographer pointed out what she said was the scrotum, didn't think to doubt her...

nicolamumof3 · 11/03/2011 20:46

Don't worry everyone!! Its just another thing to stress over unecessarily i think. As long as baby healthy that is obviously most improtant. As well as remembering it is more likely the sonographers prediction is right than wrong Smile

Marabou · 11/03/2011 20:50

We were told at the 20 weeks scan it's a boy and when the sonographer showed us his bits, I couldn't see how it could be a girl as that was a clear willy Grin! Even the sonographer said it was 100% certain. Gosh, most of our clothes are blue with little tractors etc. on them so hope they didn't get it wrong Smile...

CaringForPod · 11/03/2011 20:51

Agree completely, healthy baby is the important thing. We haven't gone boy crazy, but we were given loads of boy stuff before we found out and then grandparents-to-be have bought us more stuff.

But yes, as long as he (she) has two legs and all the requisite fingers and toes, I know it's nothing serious to worry about!

going · 11/03/2011 20:51

I was told at 20 weeks my ds was a girl!

muffins · 11/03/2011 20:56

Where I work we audit ourselves on fetal sexing and we are 98% accurate so 60% does seem a little low. In our experience the number of mistakes is equal for boys/girls. An absence of willy bits is not (and shouldn't be!) taken as a definite for a girl. It's possible to see labia.
Lots of things affect how well you can see, baby position and maternal size probably being two of the biggest factors.
It is not more accurate to predict sex from angle of genitals at 12 weeks, best odds are from 16 weeks onwards.

I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant and can't decide whether to find out or not....decisions, decisions

MerryMarigold · 11/03/2011 22:55

oooh muffins, can you give yourself unlimited scans? It would be too tempting to find out! Yes, sonographer could clearly see dd's labia, and was trying to point them out to me, but there's no way I could see it. Good luch with finding out. I had a surprise first time and found out second time.

MumofFourBoys · 21/06/2011 13:56

Hi

On Saturday I had a gender scan done with Babybond. I was 15 weeks and 5 days. Within 2 minutes the sonographer said that's conslusive and showed me the boys penis. Babybond say they have 99% accurancy rate. Four weeks ago we had a gender blood test done with pink or blue which is over 95% accuracy and said girl (has anyone done this either). I am glad bubs is healthy but I am disappointed too as I already have 4 boys and to think for the last 4 weeks you were having a girl to be told it's now a boy I don't know what to think. The penis shape is just straight within lines through it not snail shape and after looking on baby2see.com, could it be that it is a girl - what are your thoughts?

BikeRunSki · 21/06/2011 14:00

I am 22 weeks pg with no 2.
NHS scan = almost certainly a boy
Babybond = girl

MumofFourBoys · 27/06/2011 09:56

Hi BikeRunSKi, when did you have both of your scans done? I know they can't help it in any way but it's really confusing when one says one thing and one says another isn't it?

firsttimer84 · 27/06/2011 16:40

I was told at 20 week scan it is a boy and they showed me why he was.

Now though I'm scared it's wrong. Not because I dont want a girl (quite the opposite, I was convinced it was a girl for the first 5 months) but because I've spent the last 8 weeks calling him him and we've named him. I picture him as a boy, although we havent gone mad with blue etc.

I've got another scan (diabetic) on wednesday so I'll get them to double check. Crikey this is probably why people don't want to know!

buttonmoon78 · 27/06/2011 17:54

I've found out for the first time this time (#4). Clearly saw meat and two veg for myself. Sonographer said that's def a boy or the most unfortunate girl I've ever seen Grin

She said she's never been wrong (that she's been told) and our hospital's accuracy rate is 95% overall.

Eviepoo · 27/06/2011 17:58

My DD is a gorgeous 11.5 year old girl. At 20 week scan they thought she was a boy. Didn't bother finding out this time.

Eviepoo · 27/06/2011 17:59

PS they were 99% sure she was a boy too.

MumofFourBoys · 28/06/2011 16:43

Has anyone checked out baby2see.com and seen the difference of boys and girls up till 22 weeks pregnant (20 weeks). I could not believe my eyes I can see why they make mistakes sometimes, it's hardly their fault when the similarities between them are quite something - I can't believe I have four children and never knew this!

outthere · 28/06/2011 18:03

I'd be really interested to see those pictures - have had a look at the website but can't see it anywhere - how do I find it?

Thanks

MumofFourBoys · 29/06/2011 00:32

Hiya outthere. Go on baby2see.com then select the boy or girl? from the home page, the click on the external genitalia development. Below is the link.
