As the title says I've put on nearly two stone already (due to terrible nausea in first 16 weeks and pure greed on my part!) and was wondering if anyone had any good healthy snack ideas as I get very very hungry!

Hi Heather, I've been searching for healthy snacks too. Dried fruit, home made fat free fruit muffins, home made granola, ham, low fat yogurt, fruit... it's so hard not to hit the carbs when you're constantly hungry - I know!

LittleMissSnowShine · 09/03/2011 20:46

I loved the cook yourself thin recipes on the channel 4 website - snacking on fruit and raw veg etc sounds ok on paper but they can be acidy and cause heartburn as pregnancy goes on so it's nice to have things you can cook that are low fat to snack on.

skandi1 · 09/03/2011 20:57

am in exactly same boat as you both in terms of weeks and weightgain. argh.

had bad nausea and so hungry.

i have snacked on fresh fruit, nuts etc. to no avail.

any other ideas would be welcome.

I'm around 18 weeks and have put on a stone already, which is what I put on during my entire first pregnancy. Also due to nausea/sickness. And me thinking "what the hell, this might be the last time (if this is my last pregnancy) that I can eat a whole pack of doughnuts what I like and not feel guilty".

Am trying not to feel too bad about it and balance out the crap with some Innocent smoothies and fruit pots when I get the inclination.

I ate badly during first pregnancy and DD has turned out okay, underweight if anything (small for her age), albeit with a very strong penchant for chocolate.

I would just say to eat what your body tells you, try to balance it with some good stuff, and make sure you get some exercise too. You have the rest of your life to diet!

TransatlanticCityGirl · 09/03/2011 23:12

MrsBloomingTroll if you have 1 smoothie per day you will put on an extra stone over the course of 12 months. Although they are good for nutrients they are high in fructose and sadly when it comes to converting sugar to fat the body doesn't differentiate btw natural and other sugars.
Not saying smoothies are all bad but as OP was concerned abt weight gain I would not recommend smoothies but I would recommend eating the fruits whole as they are more filling that way, so less calories and sugar.

I'm 25 weeks and have put on just a bit more than a stone. Mainly snack on yogurt, fruit, nuts. I like trying a different fruit every day, figs, mango, pineapple, passionfruit, apples, different berries, bananas, kiwi.... You name it. Sometimes dried fruit but that has a similar effect as smoothies. Sometimes cottage cheese or hard cheese. Small amounts of carbs, as need some but i take them mostly in my main meals and don't snack on them. Sometimes cereal though even at 4pm!

My weakness is less to do with what I'm snacking on and more to do with what I have for dessert!

BooBearBoo · 09/03/2011 23:21

I put on 5 stone when I was pregnant!! Blush But then again I have just about lost it all now (3lbs to go!!) and DS is only 18weeks old Grin

Apparently all you really need is an extra 400cals in the last 4 weeks!! Which equates to something like one slice of cheese on toast in the evening :)

(Obviously I didnt follow that advice... Wink )

lindy100 · 10/03/2011 07:46

Transatlantic, your advice is great, but the fruit idea, lovely as it is, sounds potentially v expensive - I love berries, I love passion fruit, but I don't buy them v often because we can't afford them!

Crumpets are so much cheaper Grin

At 17 weeks, I have put on 16lbs. Not too happy, but as MrsB said, this is my last planned pg, so I'll worry about it another time. Lost it all last time, will again this time.

facefull · 10/03/2011 07:55

I have 20 days left to due date and I have put on 3 stone and 4 pounds!!!! Oh dear!!!

BelieveInLife · 10/03/2011 08:23

Beware of snacking on dried fruit also - this is very high in calories.

SarahScot · 10/03/2011 08:37

I've got 1 day left until my due date and have put on 3 and a half stone! Oops!

heather79 · 10/03/2011 10:12

Thanks for all your advice - much appreciated. My hubby has sent me to work with some carrot and celery sticks and nuts to snack on and will be walking at lunchtime. Love the sound of home made fat free fruit muffins RugbyWidow7 - do you have a recipe?

Im 21 weeks and have only put on 5lbs !! Im not boasting im actually worrying !!!!!!!!! Don't get me wrong im not skinny to start with I am a comfy size 14/16 anyway so I guess I already had the spare padding to start with and baby has just filled it !!!!!!

fatsowhale · 10/03/2011 11:07

I'm 23 weeks and have gained 2 stone - full of good intentions but every time I go off to work with carrots and celery I end up having a major emotional melt-down mid-afternoon and have to eat cakes just to be able to get through the rest of the day.

There's no getting away from the fact you need to eat more and will put on weight while pregnant. I really think we should just give ourselves a break from the pressure and guilt and wait it out.

This is my first time, though, so what do I know?!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/03/2011 11:13

I would steer clear of very low fat things, as they tend to be stuffed with either sugar and/or sweeteners to compensate.

Eat real food that will fill you up so that you don't feel the need to snack on empty calories.

Adding protein to breakfast is a really good way of avoiding the 11am munchies.
I have something like a slice of cheese, a couple of oatcakes and an apple mid-afternoon and that keeps me away from the cake!

fatsowhale · 10/03/2011 11:28

Yes, I'd agree - add protein, it's a really good filler.

minibmw2010 · 10/03/2011 12:16

I'm 28 weeks and have put on 2st exactly. I'm guessing I'll hit the 3st mark by the time I'm 40 weeks (eek) if not more .. but if that's what happens, that's what happens. I'm trying really hard not to focus too much on my food and just to make sure I make good choices (most of the time) and don't beat myself up about the odd chocolate bar in the afternoon.

Oddly, I've found it quite hard to find any information about what is a healthy "range" to put on during a pregnancy as when I asked my midwife she just said "oh you're doing fine as you are, don't worry" and hasn't weighed me at all, so I'm wondering if they've been told not to focus on weight?

MrsBloomingTroll · 10/03/2011 12:36

I think with my doughnut-scoffing antics yesterday Blush the smoothies are the least of my worries!

Weighed myself this morning and I only weighed 9lbs more than pre-pregnancy, not a whole stone. Maybe they were magical weigh-loss doughnuts I ate? Wink

OP, weigh yourself in the mornings (naked) if you want to feel better! Or not at all.

BTW, a friend informs me that WeightWatchers now have a plan for bf'ing mothers. So I'll be signing up to that this time next year!

MrsBloomingTroll · 10/03/2011 12:37

weight-loss

TransatlanticCityGirl · 10/03/2011 20:55

lindy100, yes, some of the more exotic fruits are expensive. But there's plenty of affordable and healthy choices out there!

Plus, I personally feel good quality food is one of the better investments one can make. I find it odd when people are willing to spend money on things like alcohol, face creams, nice clothese... but they don't look after what goes into their body. not implying that's what you yourself are doing, but many people do that!
