Nuchal Scan - Twins

Hi, I found out from an early scan that I'm having ID twins and the regular 12 week scan is next week. Silly question really but presuming this will take twice as long as they will be taking all the measurements twice? Does anyone know how long it will take?
thanks x

Wow! Congratulations!!

I think how long it takes depends on what position the babies are in and how amenable to measurement they are, little tikes :)
Depends also on how long an appointment slot the hopsital is able to give you. Have you asked them?

My NT took about 15 mins but baby was playing ball and settled into a good position once it was used to being pushed upon. With DS2, it took twice as long and I was TWICE sent out the room to jump around in the corridor/walk up and down stairs as he was sleeping in a rubbish position and would. Not. Move. (He's similarly difficult now he's here!)

One would assume if all is positioned well then it could be as little as half an hour but not sure if they do any other checks at this point (such as checking to see if they're sharing the same sac, etc) but if they are being tricksy could be longer with the possibility of a recall?

Yes it will take twice as long, and you are likely to have quite a few scans in the next few months.

Congratulations by the way!

Top tip from me is to write IDENTICAL TWINS in big letters on the front of your notes. It used to drive me mad seeing lots of different people, and after reading my notes for a couple of minutes they would
say "oh you are having twins..."

Hope pregnancy goes really well for you.

My nuchal scan took about 45 minutes altogether, but one of the twins wasn't playing ball so after failing to get her to move into the right position we had to have the internal (rather than abdominal) scan.

Best of luck with your pregnancy

I had id twins 7 years ago, yes scans will take longer and you will have lots of them! Congratulations!

yep scans will take twice as long and they can do the down syndrome screen on the scan on twins but obviously not the blood test.

Im currently 30 weeks pregnant with my 2nd set of twins :)

Yaya70 · 09/03/2011 20:34

Just to add about the blood test, some places do it for twins and some don't. Where I went (UCLH) they did it, but they just adjust the algorithm for the fact that there are two fetuses. They explained to me that with twins, they expect the HCG level to be twice as high as a singleton, but the PAPP-A should be the same as a singleton pregnancy.

Thanks for your responses - was trying to decide whether to drive or take the train (Kings in London) - going to go with the train!
